
OSU's Defense Praised as CFB's Best By Fans as Julian Sayin Shines in Win vs. Illinois
The No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes defeated Illinois 34-16 on the road Saturday as their defense dominated once again, earning praise as one of college football's best units.
The Buckeyes forced three turnovers and held Illinois to just 4-of-14 on third-down conversions in a commanding effort.
Quarterback Julian Sayin completed 19-of-27 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Jeremiah Smith and Bo Jackson for scores. CJ Donaldson added two rushing touchdowns with 44 yards on 13 carries.
Ohio State improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten play, while Illinois fell to 5-2 and 2-2 in the conference.
Fans praised the Buckeyes' defensive dominance and their continued unbeaten run.
Ohio State scored on both of its first-quarter possessions and forced an interception on Illinois' opening drive to take a 10-0 lead after 15 minutes.
The Buckeyes continued their dominance in the second quarter, forcing a turnover on downs and a fumble while adding a field goal and a touchdown. Illinois managed just a field goal, and Ohio State took a 20-3 lead into halftime.
Illinois finally punched one in after the break, but Ohio State immediately responded with a touchdown on the following drive, and the Buckeyes' defense kept the pressure on by forcing another fumble. Illinois trailed 27-10 after three.
Play slowed in the fourth quarter as the Buckeyes added another touchdown and Illinois found the end zone once more. Ohio State rolled to a 34-16 victory.
The Buckeyes will face Wisconsin on the road next Saturday.
