NBA Trade Rumors: Rounding Up Latest on Potential Player Movement

Justin NeumanJul 19, 2015

The NBA is starting to become a year-round sport. We thought the season was over when the Golden State Warriors won the NBA championship, but then we had the draft, the opening of free agency and the DeAndre Jordan soap opera.

Most teams have put the finishing touches on their free-agent signings, leaving only a few stragglers waiting to get a new deal. But that hasn't stopped the trade rumor mill from buzzing. Here's the latest on players who could still be moved this offseason.

Knicks Haven't Lost in a Month 🤷‍♂️

It's been a rough few days for Ty Lawson. After he was arrested for his second DUI, a judge ordered Lawson to enter an alcohol treatment program before he faces charges. It should not come as a surprise, then, that the Denver Nuggets are looking to move on from him.

According to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, teams like the Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons and Los Angeles Lakers are interested in Lawson's services.

Mannix goes on to say that drafting Emmanuel Mudiay means the Nuggets may not have a need for Lawson:

"

The presence of Emmanuel Mudiay—the 6’5”, 200-pound former high school phenom who has emerged as one of the breakout stars of the Las Vegas summer league—has made Lawson largely expendable in Denver. Despite playing just 12 games for the Guangdong Southern Tigers last season, Mudiay, 19, has looked like a polished pro in Vegas and is poised to be the centerpiece of Denver’s rebuilding effort.

"

After averaging 15.2 points and 9.6 assists per game last year (the latter good for third in the league), Lawson is a veritable bargain, with two years and roughly $25 million remaining on his contract, per Spotrac.

Mannix also noted that the Sacramento Kings could squeeze into the party, considering the connections between Lawson and current Kings head coach, George Karl. But as Spotrac points out, the Kings have some cap concerns, so they would need to do some salary gymnastics to fit him in.

The Lakers (obviously) could use him despite recently drafting D'Angelo Russell. Russell could play either guard position, and Lawson could be a good stopgap as he adjusts to the pro game. The Rockets, meanwhile, could use Lawson's playmaking ability to take some pressure off James Harden.

It's unclear what kind of compensation the Nuggets are looking for, but if he sorts his issues out, he could be a solid addition.

Celtics Still Trying to Make Moves

The Boston Celtics aren't used to rebuilding. But that is now where they find themselves after years of dominance. This offseason alone, they used two first-round picks on Terry Rozier and R.J. Hunter. They then sent a future second-round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Perry Jones.

However, the Celtics appear to still be busy. According to Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald, they are sniffing around about Danilo Gallinari:

The Nuggets, as we know, are also in rebuilding mode. It would be odd, though, for them to move on from the 26-year-old Gallinari, even if he is coming off some injury trouble.

The Nuggets may just be entertaining calls, however, because Christopher Dempsey of the Denver Post reports Denver is looking to extend Gallinari's contract.

Because of his versatility at forward, the Nuggets will likely look to keep Gallinari if they can ink him to an extension. However, if the Celtics blow them away with a few of their many future draft picks, the Nuggets could very well consider moving on.
