Bill Belichick Reportedly Told UNC Don't Post Patriots-Related Content on Social Media

Julia StumbaughOct 6, 2025

UNC football coach Bill Belichick has reportedly told his program not to post or reshare content regarding the New England Patriots, 247Sports' Ross Martin reported Monday.

North Carolina did not acknowledge former Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye's performance in a Sunday night win over the Buffalo Bills until around 10 a.m. ET Monday, about two hours after Martin's report.

Maye took over as the Patriots' starter last fall during the franchise's first season since parting ways with Belichick. He led a game-winning drive in Sunday's fourth quarter to hand Josh Allen and the Bills their first defeat of the season.

Former UNC head coach Mack Brown, who was fired by the program ahead of Belichick's January hiring, also posted on Monday morning, congratulating Maye:

247Sports' Andrew Jones noted that UNC had previously shared three highlight clips from Maye's sophomore season with the Patriots, including one from a Week 1 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders and two from a Week 2 win over the Miami Dolphins.

Between Sept. 14 and the Monday of Oct. 6, however, Jones noted that UNC stopped publicly acknowledging Maye's season.

The program did not repost any of the three total touchdowns Maye scored on Sept. 28 in a 42-13 Week 4 win over the Carolina Panthers.

CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones reported that North Carolina sent Maye "a care package as recently as last week" and that Belichick has a signed jersey from the quarterback hanging in his office.

But Belichick has made it clear during his first season as a college football head coach that he still has negative feelings toward the Patriots after he and the franchise parted ways in 2024 following 24 seasons and six Super Bowl wins.

When asked on Sept. 6 about an ESPN report claiming that Patriots staffers had been banned from UNC facilities, Belichick told reporters, "It's clear I'm not welcome there at their facility. So they're not welcome at ours."

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, meanwhile, said when asked about the reported ban that New England would need "to find other ways to get the information for any players that we want to look at North Carolina."

The purported social media ban is the latest item in a series of reports regarding off-field drama regarding Belichick's first season with the program, which fell to 2-3 with last Saturday's loss to Clemson. The Tar Heels have a bye this weekend before returning to action against Cal on Friday, Oct. 17.
