British Open 2015 Leaderboard: Twitter Reacts to Results, Standings from Friday

Brian MaziqueJul 17, 2015

Play was suspended due to darkness during the second round of the 2015 Open Championships on Friday at St. Andrews in Scotland. When play halted, Dustin Johnson had maintained his one-stroke lead by shooting three under through 13 holes. All but one of the chasers from yesterday had fallen back a bit.

Danny Willett is the only one nipping at D.J.'s heels as he matched Johnson's three-under, but he finished his day before darkness fell. The Englishman will become the biggest story of the weekend if he doesn't fade early in the third round.

Here's a look at the real-time leaderboard.

Were it not for two bogeys on the back nine, Willett would have been in an even better position and he'd have applied even more pressure on Johnson. As it stands, Willett is still in a good spot to challenge for his first major championship.

Per this tweet from the Golf Channel's Jason Sobel, it's clear Willett's mom didn't have the highest expectations for her son at The Open Championship:

Willett is not one of those players who stays away from social media during a tournament. Shortly after his second round concluded, he took to Twitter to address the madness and attention he's getting for being in contention:

He might have an edge over Johnson going into the weekend. Because Willett got his round in before play was suspended, he could theoretically be more rested for a tense two days of golf.

Goodbye to a Legend

Legendary golfer Tom Watson shared a special moment with the crowd on Friday. Watson played his final hole on the 18th just before the stoppage in play. ESPN's SportsCenter captured Watson's farewell:

Watson shot a tournament-worst 12-over par and will miss the cut. He didn't like the way he played but had no regrets after a stellar run. Per Golf Digest, Watson said this:

The 65-year-old won the Open five times and has every right to hold his head high, no matter how the final round ended.

What About Tiger?

You had to ask. Tiger Woods struggled on Thursday and things didn't get any better on Friday. After a plus-four 76 to start the tournament, Woods was one-over par through 11 holes before the halt in play.

To put it plain, Woods has to shoot five-under par through the last seven holes to make the cut. If you think that's depressing, let this tweet from ESPN.com's Bob Harig sink in:

He did sink his first birdie on the 10th hole. Perhaps that's a start, but he'll need to be unbelievable on Saturday to have a chance. And frankly, that's unbelievable. Love him or hate him, it's hard to watch such a great athlete struggle this badly.
