Lee WalkerJul 17, 2015

Steve Smith made a double century as Australia posted a huge first-innings total on Day 2 of the second Ashes Test against England.

Smith scored a career-best 215 before the tourists declared at tea on 566 for eight at Lordโ€™s, London.

The hosts were then reduced to 85 for four in their reply and face a battle to avoid the follow-on after taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series in Cardiff last week.

Smith continued an incredible run of form in Test match cricket, writing his name in history in the process.

The Australia vice-captain hit 25 boundaries and a six in making his maiden double century in any form of the game.

When he was eventually trapped lbw by Joe Root, Australia had advanced to 533 for six and were in a commanding position.

The tourists resumed on 337 for one with overnight centurion Chris Rogers taking a nasty blow on the helmet from Jimmy Andersonโ€™s opening delivery of the day.

Rogers had added 15 to the 158 he made on Thursday before playing on to Stuart Broad, and Australia went to lunch on 424 for three after skipper Michael Clarke (7) pulled a short Mark Wood delivery to square leg.

Broad picked up three wickets in the afternoon session. He had Adam Voges (25) caught behind and Mitchell Marsh (12) dragged on before Smithโ€™s 346-ball vigil ended.

Root picked up a second wicket when he had debutant Peter Nevill caught at mid-off after making 45 before Broad dismissed Mitchell Johnson (15) to finish with four for 83.

Clarke unleashed his bowlers for the final session and there were instant dividends as Adam Lyth was caught behind from the second ball of the innings by Mitchell Starc.

Gary Ballance (23), Ian Bell (1) and Joe Root (1) were then fired out in the space of 12 balls as Johnson picked up two wickets sandwiched by a Josh Hazlewood strike.

England captain Alastair Cook held firm and is 21 not out overnight while Ben Stokes played fluently to stand unbeaten on 38, but the home side need 282 more just to avoid to the follow-on.
