NBA Trade Rumors: Latest Buzz on Potential Ty Lawson Deal, Nick Young and More

Sean ODonnellJul 17, 2015

It's a good idea to keep your head on a swivel at this point of the NBA offseason, as new rumors surface on a daily basis and either add to—or altera previous piece of gossip. That seems to be the case with some of the most recent buzz from trusted sources around the Web.

Considering some of the drama that occurred earlier this summer—namely DeAndre Jordan spurning the Dallas Mavericks by making a last-minute decision to stay with the Los Angeles Clippers—we should be expecting certain pieces of information to change at the drop of a hat. After all, that's generally par for the course when dealing with rumors.

Knicks Haven't Lost in a Month 🤷‍♂️

So, here are the burning questions: What's changed recently, and which teams and players are now involved in the latest NBA gossip? Here's a look at a few examples that have been brought to light by NBA insiders.

Lakers Interested in Lawson?

The Denver Nuggets have been looking to offload Ty Lawson for quite some time now. The team aimed to deal the guard at last season's trade deadline, but its efforts were fruitless. Lawson found himself on the block once again early this summer, but two arrests for suspicion of DUI in a matter of six months has crushed his value.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports tweeted the gloomy outlook of a potential trade:

Well, despite the previous lack of interest and Lawson's legal issues, the Los Angeles Lakers appear to be interested in acquiring his services. Here's what is currently being said about the situation, per Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated:

"

Despite a second DUI arrest in the last six months, embattled Denver Nuggets guard Ty Lawson is generating interest on the trade market, NBA sources told SI.com. Houston, Detroit and the L.A. Lakers are among the teams that have expressed interest in Lawson recently, and there remains a strong possibility the Nuggets could unload Lawson before training camp.

"

That's a major about-face from what was previously reported. Lawson's effectiveness on the court isn't in question here. He's been highly productive in Denver and is coming off a season where he averaged 15.2 points, 9.6 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game while shooting 43.6 percent from the floor. If teams are willing to deal with his off-court issues, they may be able to get a bargain price.

Young Staying in Los Angeles?

Another player who has been the focus of trade rumors this summer is Lakers swingman Nick Young. Last year was turbulent for the forward, as he dealt with nagging injuries and his defensive woes caused a rift with head coach Byron Scott. After Los Angeles made some key offseason acquisitions, moving Young to free up cap space seemed like a reasonable maneuver.

Well, things have since changed. According to a tweet from Bill Oram of the Orange County Register, Young appears likely to remain in Los Angeles for at least one more season:

Perhaps an expected improvement on the defensive side of the court played a part in the team's decision to hang onto Young. The swingman has reportedly been working on that part of his game during the offseason, according to Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News:

"

Young told Los Angeles News Group in late May he has followed Scott's advice to improve his decision making, playing off-the-ball and off-ball defense.

"I don't know what he's doing," said Scott, who said he has only talked with Young twice this offseason. "If he’s saying that's what he’s doing, then that’s what I believe he's doing."

"

Despite an inconsistent year where he shot just 36.6 percent from the floor, Young still managed to average 13.4 points per game as the team's sixth man. Small forward is arguably the Lakers' thinnest position, and if Young can elevate his game, he'll certainly be an asset for a team that's looking to bounce back next season.

Chalmers Leaving Miami?

The Miami Heat made a big move over the offseason in re-signing guard Goran Dragic to a massive deal. While he certainly solidifies the team's point guard position, the question of who his backup will be still lingers.

Miami currently has several options on the roster, including Shabazz Napier, Tyler Johnson and Josh Richardson, and that may be part of the reason why the team is looking to offload Mario Chalmers. The other part of the equation is the Heat's intention to offload Chalmers' upcoming $4.3 million salary in an effort to avoid a hefty tax bill.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported the rumor:

"

The Heat has time to move Chalmers, because a team's tax bill is based on the roster on the final day of the regular season, an NBA spokesman said. But Miami appears interested in moving as soon as it can find a suitable deal, according to a league official who has spoken to the Heat.

"

Chalmers has played all seven of his NBA seasons with the Heat, and he's coming off a campaign in which he recorded a career-high 10.2 points per game. He also added 2.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists per contest while shooting 40.3 percent from the floor. The price will have to be right, but based on the guard's past success, we should hear about potential suitors in the near future.
