Canelo Alvarez Talks Terence Crawford Rematch for Next Fight with 2 Left on Contract
Terence Crawford was clearly the better fighter during Saturday's unanimous-decision victory over Canelo Alvarez that earned him the undisputed middleweight title, but the latter is open to a potential rematch.
"Like I said to him, I feel great to share the ring with great fighters like him," Alvarez said after the fight (1:40 mark). "And if we do it again, it's going to be great. But you know what? I'm glad to share the ring with great fighters. And I'm glad to be here."
Oliver Jones of Marca noted Alvarez signed a four-fight deal with Turki Alalshikh with Riyadh Season that could be extended to a fifth fight. The bout against Crawford was just the second one on the contract, so there are at least two more remaining.
Jones listed May and September of 2026 as the likely dates Alvarez will fight again and also pointed to Christian Mbilli and Dmitry Bivol as possible opponents.
But there may be no fight that will draw as much intrigue for the 35-year-old at this point of his career than a rematch with Crawford.
"I already did a lot in boxing," he said after Saturday's loss. "I already accomplished a lot in boxing. My legacy is already there. … I feel great, I feel strong."
Alvarez is one of the most notable names in boxing history, but Crawford stole the show Saturday.
He moved up from 154 pounds to 168 pounds to participate in the fight and had no trouble with Alvarez's power and strength as the bout continued. ESPN's Andreas Hale noted the judges scored it 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113, although the fight may not have been as close as those numbers indicated.
After all, Crawford landed 115 total punches to 99 from Alvarez and enjoyed a 45-16 advantage in jabs.
As a result, he became the first male boxer in the four-belt era to be undisputed champ in three different weight classes.
Perhaps it will be a different story if there is a rematch, which Crawford also told reporters he was open to in his post-fight press conference (13:35 mark). Alvarez could change his overall approach and strategy, especially now that he knows his power might not be enough to overwhelm Crawford.
He would surely love another chance, but Crawford was in full control Saturday.
