Hatton was scheduled to fight Eisa Al Dah on Dec. 2, his first time in the ring since 2012. In recent weeks, he had updated fans through social media on his training for the bout.
A number of sports luminaries mourned the British star:
Hatton was a champion in the welterweight and light-welterweight divisions at one time. He began his professional career with 43 straight wins, a run that included a 2005 victory over Kostya Tszyu and a knockout of Carlos Maussa later that year.
Hatton's success put him on a collision course with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007. He made into the 10th round before going down via TKO. He also opposed Manny Pacquiao in 2009, suffering a second-round knockout.
After retiring from boxing, Hatton was candid about his struggles with depression and alcohol abuse.
"I was coming off the rails with my drinking and that led to drugs," he told BBC Radio 4 in 2016. "It was like a runaway train."
Hatton walked away from boxing with a 45-3 record over 15 years.
