AEW Collision Results, Winners, Live Grades, Reaction and Highlights from Sept. 13
Welcome to Bleacher Report's live coverage of AEW Collision on September 13.
With All Out taking place next weekend, it's all hands on deck to help build the annual PPV, but there was still plenty of time for the usual action we've come to expect on Saturday nights.
Here is a look at what AEW advertised for Saturday's show:
- Kazuchika Okada vs. Michael Oku (Unified Championship)
- Paragon vs. Jon Moxley and Daniel Garcia
- FTR vs. Adam Priest and Tommy Billington
- Anthony Bowens vs. Konosuke Takeshita
- Jamie Hayter, Tay Melo, Anna Jay, Kris Statlander and Harley Cameron vs. Megan Bayne, Penelope Ford, Thekla, Julia Hart and Skye Blue
Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's episode of Collision.
MJF and Mark Briscoe's All out Stipulation
1 of 9Collision opened with Ian Riccaboni bringing out MJF to talk about his feud with Mark Briscoe.
He did his usual routine of running down the residents of the city they are in while bragging about his own accomplishments.
Briscoe appeared on the big screen and revealed that the stipulation for their match at All Out would be a Tables and Thumbtacks match.
The Chicken said he had a wedding present for MJF and then surprised him by tackling him from behind, revealing that the video of him was pre-recorded.
He dumped out some tacks on the mat but MJF managed to escape before being hit with a Jay Driller. This segment was short and sweet. It didn't overstay its welcome and did what it needed to do in under 10 minutes.
Grade: B
Konosuke Takeshita vs. Anthony Bowens
2 of 9Roderick Strong, Kyle O'Reilly and Hologram had a quick backstage segment before we went back to the ring for Takeshita's entrance.
This was The Five-Tool Player's biggest opportunity as a singles competitor since The Acclaimed broke up, but he didn't have Billy Gunn in his corner for support.
They wasted no time getting right to the action. Takeshita scored the first takedown with a flying shoulder tackle within seconds, but it didn't keep Bowens down for long.
Bowens may have been giving up some size, but not enough to keep this from feeling like a fair fight. We returned from a break to see them trading shots in the middle of the ring.
The Pride of Pro Wrestling hit the Mollywhop, but it sent Takeshita out of the ring. After Bowens brought him back in, Big Take countered another Mollywhop and hit his finisher for the pin.
This was a good match that could have been a great match had it gone on a few more minutes. They felt like they were just heating up when it ended.
Result: Takeshita defeated Bowens
Grade: B
Notable Moments and Observations
- As usual, Don Callis was on commentary for his client.
- The crossbody Bowens hit from the top rope to the floor looked great.
- Seeing a guy the size of Takeshita hit a poison rana will always be cool.
- Bowens hit what the announcers called a nice swinging neckbreaker from the corner, but it looked more like a DDT from the impact.
5-on-5 $500K Tag Match
3 of 9
Half a million dollars was on the line when The Triangle of Madness teamed up with Bayne and Ford to take on TayJay, Statlander, Cameron and Hayter.
Stat was going to start for her team against Bayne, but Hayter tagged herself in. This continued the tension from their pre-match interview where they almost got into a fight.
Matches like this are always a little chaotic and hard to manage because there has to be a lot of quick tags so everyone gets some time in the ring.
The heels had the upper hand for most of the first half before the show cut to a break. When we returned, the babyfaces were beginning to make a comeback.
Stat and Hayter were still having some issues, but they attempted to keep each other in the fight.
Thekla was able to get the win for her team to get the $500K prize, but Statlander wanted to keep fighting and pulled her out of the ring. Mina Shirakawa and Queen Aminata came out and joined the fray.
This is one of those matches that had a lot of fun moments, but as a whole, it was a little all over the place. Part of that was by design, but it's hard to make a bout with this many people as good as a singles or standard tag match.
Result: Triangle of Madness, Bayne and Ford won
Grade: C+
Notable Moments and Observations
- The Triangle of Madness does not feel like it has a clear leader between Thekla and Hart, but Blue definitely feels like the lowest in the pecking order, which is sad because she has done some great work in AEW.
- Once again, Bayne had the coolest entrance gear.
- Toni Storm was hilarious on commentary.
- Bayne and Ford have developed some nice chemistry as a team. They had some good double-team moves.
Max Caster Open Challenge
4 of 9We returned from a break to see Max Caster already mid-promo, asking for an opponent for another open challenge. The call was answered by Big Bill.
The seven-foot powerhouse immediately crushed Caster in the corner and began talking trash to Eddie Kingston into the camera. He won in under two minutes. The most offense Caster got in was a slap.
The crowd chanted for Kingston and Bill got on the mic and asked where he was at. He insulted the fans for liking Eddie more than him. He told Kingston ot meet him at All Out.
Result: Big Bill defeated Caster
Grade: Incomplete
Notable Moments and Observations
- AEW has been showing more social media screenshots lately. It will be interesting to see if they ever use Bluesky since a huge art of the AEW audience is there.
Will the Acclaimed Reunite?
5 of 9Caster was backstage when he was blindsided by Bowens, who brought him all the way to the ring for a fight. Jerry Lynn came in to break up the fight and got on the mic to yell at them.
Lee Johnson and Blake Christian came out and accused Lynn of trying to take Billy Gunn's place as their manager. They said he should be trying to focus on them, not The Acclaimed.
They got in the ring and attacked Lynn and Caster. Bowens looked conflicted but eventually ran back to make the save. Once they had driven off Lee and Christian, Bowens and Caster made it clear they were not friends again.
This was an interesting direction to take this story. It has felt like Bowens would help facilitate a babyface turn for Caster, but not this way. Lynn is an intriguing addition to the story, too. It looks like we could see a reunion soon.
Grade: B
FTR vs. Adam Priest and Tommy Billington
6 of 9We got a rematch from last week with Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler taking on the duo of Priest and Billington.
Harwood started against Billington but tagged out after being taken off his feet one time. Wheeler fared a bit better, but Billington still kept him on his toes.
This was much different from their first encounter. Priest and Billington still felt like underdogs, but not as much after having such a good showing in their previous encounter.
We returned from a break to see Priest going on a rampage against both members of FTR, but Wheeler low-bridged him out of the ring to stop his momentum.
All four guys worked stiff and made this a fun and hard-hitting fight. Billington and Priest looked even better than they did in their first bout, but it still didn't feel like they had much of a chance due to FTR being involved in a bigger storyline with Christian Cage and Adam Copeland.
This was an outstanding performance from everyone involved, but when it was all over, FTR got the victory with a spike piledriver.
Result: FTR defeated Billington and Priest
Grade: A
Notable Moments and Observations
- Priest and Billington coordinated their gear this week. It's a sign that they might be a tag team moving forward and not just a random duo.
- Some of the shots Priest took from Harwood looked really stiff.
- Tony Schiavone called Priest and Billington "The Crimson Bulldogs," which is a pretty great name for a tag team.
- The DDT Priest hit on the apron was incredible. It was very unique and Wheeler sold it perfectly.
Kazuchika Okada vs. Michael Oku
7 of 9This wasn't Oku's first match in AEW, but it was definitely his biggest opportunity to date when he faced Okada for the Unified Championship.
They locked up and Okada backed Oku to the roped for a clean break, but he made sure to big-time him with a little chest pat. Oku fired back with a smack, which fired The Rainmaker up.
Okada was firmly in control and Oku took a big fall to the floor as we went to a break. We returned to see the champ still dominating the match, but Oku countered the Rainmaker Clothesline and hit a jumping kick.
Okada nailed a dropkick as Oku was flying off the top rope. He hit a tombstone piledriver followed by his patented Rainmaker clothesline for the pin and the win.
This was a solid outing for Oku and a good defense for Okada, but what happened next was more interesting. Takeshita came out and pointed at Okada. Both men are already set to be in the three-way match at All Out for the title, and the third competitor will be decided next week.
Result: Okada defeated Oku
Grade: B+
Notable Moments and Observations
- It would have been nice for Oku and Amira to get a short promo before the match. Fans who are unfamiliar with them probably had no idea why he was getting such a big title match.
- There was a fan in the crowd who was screaming louder than anyone else when the match got started.
- The sound Oku made when slapping his leg for a superkick was louder than usual.
Paragon vs. Death Riders
8 of 9
This week's main event saw Moxley and Garcia team up to take on Strong and O'Reilly. Garcia was sporting some simple black shorts, kneepads and shoes instead of his usual gear to show a shift in her personality.
Mox and Garcia tried to take control early, but KOR and Strong are the more experienced duo and managed to keep them on defense for a while. It took a little help from Marina Shafir to give The Death Riders the advantage.
Once Garcia and Mox had the upper hand, they started trying to hurt their opponents. The Paragon didn't go down without a fight, but you could tell how this would end long before it was over.
This was a strong performance from all four men. KOR and Strong are two guys you can put in the ring with anyone and get a good match, so pairing them with Mox and Garcia was guaranteed to lead to something good.
O'Reilly almost had the win with an armbar, but Garcia countered and applied the Dragon Tamer for the submission victory.
Result: Death Riders defeated Paragon
Grade: B+
Notable Moments and Observations
- Garcia and Yuta being in the same group should lead to something interesting given their history as rivals.
- O'Reilly's ability to sell is underrated.
- Strong has one of the best hot tags in the business. When he gets on a roll, he is so much fun to watch.
The Final Word
9 of 9Last week's Collision was one of the strongest episodes in a long time, and this week's show wasn't far behind.ย
Not only did we get a handful of great matches, but we saw some interesting storyline developments in a number of programs.ย
Caster and Bowens teasing a reunion with the help of Lynn was intriguing, the women's division got to participate in some entertaining mayhem, Oku put on a good performance against Okada, and Bowens and Takeshita kicked off the show with a banger.ย
However, nothing on the show came close to matching the quality of FTR vs. Priest and Billington. Their rematch from last week managed to exceed their previous performance. If you missed this week's show, go out of your way to see this match.ย
Grade: B+
