Alabama Woman Says She'd Buy Out Kalen DeBoer's Contract with $1.8B Powerball Winnings
Kalen DeBoer has a lot of things on his mind right now as Alabama looks to rebound after a season-opening loss to Florida State, but he might want to keep an eye on Saturday's Powerball drawing.
Susie Conerly, a Crimson Tide fan, told WHNT in North Alabama that her first order of business if she wins the $1.8 billion Powerball jackpot will be to pay the $70 million buyout in DeBoer's contract to remove him as head football coach.
While DeBoer needs to pay attention to the Powerball results, Conerly didn't just stop with him. She also vowed to find out how much it would cost to get Greg Byrne fired as Alabama's athletic director.
There's a lot to take away from the 24 seconds that Conerly spoke on local Alabama television, not least of which is she knew right off the top of her head how much DeBoer's buyout was.
She actually may have rounded up slightly, just to make sure she could get rid of him. It was reported by Andy Staples of On3.com earlier this week DeBoer's buyout is around $60 million if he were to be fired on or after Dec. 1 and it would be paid out in equal monthly installments through Dec. 31, 2031.
The payout structure wouldn't be an issue, since Conerly could just put it all in an escrow account and not have to worry about it.
Byrne's deal might not be as complicated to get out of. He signed a seven-year extension in March 2024 that pays him an average of $2.09 million through June 30, 2031.
Between the two, DeBoer's status seems like the more urgent matter in Tuscaloosa. He was hired with the already-unenviable task of following Nick Saban, and it hasn't gone well so far.
Alabama is 9-5 since DeBoer took over at the start of the 2024 season. The results are even more bleak over the past 10 games in which the Crimson Tide have been a .500 team (5-5).
This season started with the Crimson Tide having their lowest ranking in the AP Top 25 preseason poll since 2008 (No. 8). They out of the gate flat with a 31-17 loss to Florida State, which dropped them to 21st in this week's AP poll.
The last time Alabama was outside the top 20 in the Associated Press poll after the first week of the regular season was at the end of Saban's first season in December 2007.
Fortunately for DeBoer, the odds of winning the Powerball with a single ticket are 292.2 million-to-one. But that's not going to stop Susie from at least taking a shot to save her beloved football team from this run of mediocrity they've been going through.
