Mike ChiariSep 2, 2025

By virtue of their Week 1 victory over the Texas Longhorns, the Ohio State Buckeyes are back in the spot where they ended last season.

In the Week 2 Associated Press Top 25 Poll for the 2025 college football season, which was released on Tuesday, OSU moved up from No. 3 to No. 1 thanks to a hard-fought, 14-7 home win against a Texas team that began the campaign ranked No. 1.

Here is a full rundown of the latest rankings, courtesy of the AP (first-place votes in parenthesis):

The Buckeyes are the reigning national champs, but they lost a ton of talent on both sides of the ball to the NFL, so it was uncertain if they would be able to remain at or near the top of college football.

They answered a lot of questions on Saturday, though, as their defense held the preseason Heisman Trophy favorite, Texas quarterback Arch Manning, in check. Meanwhile, OSU's sophomore starting quarterback, Julian Sayin, made some timely throws in the win.

Texas is still viewed as a national title contender assuming Manning is able to bounce back, but the ugly offensive showing against Ohio State dropped the Longhorns to No. 7 in the rankings.

Given that Week 1 of the college football slate featured three games where top-10 teams went against each other, plenty of movement was expected in the rankings.

In one of those games, LSU outlasted Clemson to secure a 17-10 road victory in one of the toughest environments in college football.

Led by a Heisman hopeful in quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, LSU moved up six spots from No. 9 to No. 3. Meanwhile, Clemson dropped from No. 4 to No. 8, and quarterback Cade Klubnik's Heisman candidacy took an early hit as well.

The final top-10 matchup of Week 1 occurred Sunday night when Miami hosted the reigning national runner-up in Notre Dame.

Miami was in control for much of the game, leading by as much as 14 in the second half, but the Fighting Irish battled back to score 10 points in just over two minutes during the fourth quarter to tie the score at 24-24.

The decision to bring in former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck through the transfer portal ended up paying dividends for the Hurricanes, though, as he led them on a drive that yielded a go-ahead field goal with 1:07 remaining.

With Miami holding on to win 27-24, it ascended from No. 10 to No. 5 in the poll, while Notre Dame dropped from No. 6 to No. 9.

Some of the most significant movement in the poll came courtesy of Week 1's biggest surprise in the form of Florida State cruising to a 31-17 home win over Alabama.

The Crimson Tide entered the season as the No. 8 team in the nation, while the Seminoles were unranked after going 2-10 last season, which was the program's worst mark since 1974.

FSU looked like an entirely different team, though, as it led by as many as 17 in the second half and cruised to its biggest victory in quite some time.

Florida State is now back on the radar as a college football power, leaping up to No. 14 in the rankings, while Bama tumbled 13 spots to No. 21 following a highly disappointing performance under head coach Kalen DeBoer, making the Tide the biggest fallers from Week 1 to Week 2.
