New Report on Colts-Richardson Situation
The incident took place on a third-and-1 during Kansas City's first drive of the second half.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed an 11-yard scramble on the next play for the Chiefs' first touchdown of the game.
The decision not to eject Tart came because the NFL decided the hit had been "an open-hand contact to the head, that was not disqualifying action," Terry McAulay said on the YouTube broadcast (h/t Awful Announcing).
McAulay continued, "They felt that it was just an open-hand blow to the head, not a closed fist, not a punch."
The NFL rulebook gives the league office the ability to tell on-field officials to disqualify players if they "determine that a foul for a football or non-football act called on the field is flagrant."
Both Kelce and Tart went on to play a major roles in the fourth quarter.
Kelce caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to get the Chiefs within two points of tying the game, but Tart knocked down a potential two-point conversion pass from Mahomes to Noah Gray to keep the Chargers two points ahead.
The altercation with Tart marked the second time Kelce had been involved in a notable incident during Friday night's season opener.
The Chiefs tight end started out the night by colliding on the opening drive with Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who suffered an injury on the play. Worthy was later ruled out for the remainder of the game with a shoulder injury.
