AEW Dynamite Results, Winners, Live Grades, Reaction and Highlights from Sept. 3
The September 3 edition of AEW Dynamite continued the residency in the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, promising championship action and a long-awaited team-up.
Mercedes Moné put the TBS Championship on the line against rising star Alex Windsor. Could The CEO keep building her title pedigree with a successful defense?
"Hangman" Adam Page and Kenny Omega teamed together for the first time since 2023, working with JetSpeed to face The Young Bucks and Don Callis Family.
Bandido and Brody King defended the AEW World Tag Team Championships for the first time, facing Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta of The Death Riders.
Christian Cage and Adam Copeland promised to discuss their upcoming battle at All Out with FTR.
This was certain to be a wild night, living up to the history of the building in which the talent were fighting.
Gabe Kidd Gets Kidnapped in His Fight with Darby Allin
1 of 7
Gabe Kidd interrupted the card rundown for the night to call out Darby Allin. The Daredevil ran in to start the brawl.
When Allin had the advantage, Wheeler Yuta, Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli and Marina Shafir arrived in full.
Hook appeared, quickly followed by Samoa Joe and Powerhouse Hobbs. Even Willow Nightingale arrived to clear the ringside area of The Death Riders.
Kidd and Allin continued to brawl backstage. The Daredevil chloroformed The War God, trapped him in a body bag tied to his truck and drove off with him.
This was a wild start to the night, selling the continued chaos of the battle with The Death Riders. Allin has stepped up the outrageousness in this battle, and it was fun to see how Kidd matched that.
If kidnapping Yuta was not enough, perhaps taking Kidd will change the tune of Mox for a match at All Out.
This match will need a brutal stipulation to live up to the action that has built up the contest. A casket match could make sense, especially since Allin has made that his signature contest over the years.
This segment also continued to build the under-the-radar tension between a returning Hook and The Opps.
This led to a fantastic backstage promo where Joe sold clearly that he still cares about The Handsome Devil and will have his back when he needs it.
Grade
B+
Notable Moments and Observations
- Kidd jaw-jacked with the crowd just long enough to take a Coffin Drop on the outside from Allin.
- The Daredevil pulled out a thumbtacked skateboard, bringing out Yuta. Allin blasted him with the thumbtacks.
- Kidd almost hit Allin's head with a hammer while threatening to send him to God.
- Hook interrupted Joe and Hobbs backstage, questioning why The Opps replaced him. Joe explained that Hobbs stepped up, but The Opps still wanted to help Hook.
TBS Championship: Mercedes Moné (c) vs. Alex Windsor
2 of 7Alex Windsor had Mercedes Moné on the ropes, but The CEO again found a way to escape, rolling into a tight pin for three.
Despite The CEO's mocking tone afterward, the challenger tried to show her respect. When Moné threw up the middle finger in response, Windsor retaliated.
The two brawled, leading to Moné trapping Windsor in the Statement Maker. Riho made a surprise return to send the champion packing and stared at her TBS title.
This was a fantastic bout, selling Windsor better than anything in AEW has so far. She outmaneuvered The CEO throughout, wearing her out with a focus on the knees of the champion.
The physicality of Windsor paired perfectly with Moné's athleticism. They flowed throughout while selling the real damage that was wearing them both down from this fight.
The aftermath was a little sloppy, especially in comparison to the great in-ring action, but the end goal was a returning Riho standing tall.
Moné vs. Riho is a great match on paper and could be a big TV clash, or even the All Out title defense for The CEO.
Result
Moné def. Windsor by pinfall to retain the TBS Championship.
Grade
A-
Notable Moments and Observations
- Windsor caught Moné in the ropes and repeatedly smashed her knee into the apron before locking in a modified Sharpshooter under the ropes.
- This set up a later dramatic spot where Windsor got the Sharpshooter center of the ring. The CEO reversed by pulling the hair into a Statement Maker.
- On the floor, Windsor made Moné tap out to the Sharpshooter, knowing it was not considered a legal submission.
- Moné nearly took the win with the Statement Maker before the challenger grabbed the knee for a close pin attempt.
- The crowd chanted "new champ" as Riho held the TBS Championship.
Mark Briscoe vs. Lance Archer
3 of 7
Mark Briscoe demanded Don Callis reveal who he would fight from The Family to earn another shot at Kyle Fletcher for the TNT Championship.
Callis arrived to announce Briscoe would face Konosuke Takeshita on Collision. Chicken did not want to wait, and Lance Archer accepted the challenge.
Briscoe found a tough challenge in Archer, needing a Sunset Flip Powerbomb and the Froggy Bow to seal the win.
This was solid veteran action between two of AEW's most reliable workers, though the result was never in question. This could have been a quicker match with that in mind to sell the threat Briscoe could pose to The Family.
The Family has become so big that the group has multiple rivalries moving at the same time. Briscoe stepping up to Fletcher is smart business as the two have proved their chemistry.
However, Briscoe still has unfinished business with MJF that will likely supersede his slow-growing issues with Callis and Co.
Briscoe vs. Takeshita will be a great match, likely to be far more dramatic than his solid outing against Archer, but there is no reason Chicken should beat The Alpha right now.
Takeshita is coming off a huge G1 Climax win and should remain untouchable until he gets his IWGP World Championship match.
Result
Briscoe def. Archer by pinfall.
Grade
B-
Notable Moments and Observations
- Rocky Romero teased answering Briscoe's challenge, but Callis overrode him to send Archer in for the match.
- Tony Schiavone announced this was Briscoe's 50th win in AEW.
- In a pre-taped promo, "Timeless" Toni Storm begged "every woman with a pulse" to step up to be her next challenger.
AEW World Tag Team Championships: Brodido (c) vs. the Death Riders
4 of 7As Bandido and Brody King rolled over Wheeler Yuta and Claudio Castagnoli, Jon Moxley and Marina Shafir tried to get involved to steal the win.
Darby Allin arrived to attack Mox, setting the stage for Bandido to hit Yuta with the 21 Plex for the victory and first title retention.
Unsurprisingly, this was a great tag team match, though it was wrestled much more conventionally than Brodido's previous tag contests. The Death Riders kept the action contained to the ring until the final stretch.
The interference was overbearing, but it did not matter too much since Brodido won. It would have been frustrating if The Death Riders had emerged victorious.
Bandido and King have so much potential to run with the AEW World Tag Team Championships for a while.
This was a nice title defense to initially solidify their run while a more naturally established team waits to step up.
Result
Bandido and King def. Yuta and Castagnoli by pinfall to retain the AEW World Tag Team Championships.
Grade
B+
Notable Moments and Observations
- Yuta interrupted Kris Statlander and Harley Cameron's interview to promise The Death Riders had their back.
- The crowd poured hate down on Yuta throughout.
- When King got the hot tag to save Bandido, he rolled over both men, ending with a high cannonball in the corner.
- Brodido went for their finisher, but Shafir grabbed Bandido's leg enough for Castagnoli to take out the luchador with a European uppercut.
- Mox arrived to take out Bandido, and Castagnoli and Yuta hit a superplex/Fastball Special on the luchador for a wild near-fall.
- The Death Riders hit the swing/dropkick combo on Bandido, but King recovered enough to break up the pin.
The Locker Room Struggles to Keep FTR and Christian Cage-Adam Copeland Apart
5 of 7Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler attacked Adam Copeland during his entrance. Christian Cage made the save, and a brawl broke out.
Various locker room stars came out to break up the fight. When Copeland and Cage had backed down, Adam Priest and Harwood threw a few more punches at each other.
Sometimes less is more, and this segment delivered what it needed to with the limited time it had. The two teams sold why they can barely be contained until All Out.
FTR showed a killer instinct by never backing down to the veterans and even continuing to goad them forward after the tension had settled.
Priest even got a solid showcase, which was an interesting spot for an unsigned talent AEW has used regularly. It could set him up for a proving-ground match with Harwood.
Grade
B
Notable Moments and Observations
- In a backstage interview with Renee Paquette, Kazuchika Okada told Konosuke Takeshita to step back into his shadow.
- AEW aired a hype vignette for Jon Moxley vs. Daniel Garcia.
- Stokely Hathaway returned backstage to warn Copeland and Cage that revenge was coming. FTR also challenged Priest to find a partner to fight them on Collision.
- Ricochet and GOA called out The Hurt Syndicate for a match at All Out to finally deal with their issues dating back to before AEW.
- The Hurt Syndicate responded later, accepting the challenge, including MVP announcing he was stepping back into the ring.
'Hangman' Adam Page, Kenny Omega and JetSpeed vs. Young Bucks and the Family
6 of 7Kyle Fletcher and Josh Alexander worked well with Matt and Nick Jackson, simply working too well together for a team still figuring it out again.
The Young Bucks took out Adam Page, Kenny Omega and "Speedball" Mike Bailey outside then an Indie Taker with Alexander and brainbuster from Fletcher to win.
The Don Callis Family arrived in force to lay out the babyfaces. The Protostar planted The Cowboy with a brainbuster on a steel chair.
The Cleaner tried to fight them off alone but took a chair to the gut and a brainbuster through a table outside. Callis laughed as he stood with his Family.
Page and Omega on the same team was the biggest sell of this match, but everyone played a key role in this main event.
In particular, Speedball looked phenomenal throughout in his spots, keeping the action rolling. He had the longest in-ring role of anyone on the babyface team, protecting Omega and Page for big spots.
The Elite teases were well-timed without taking up too much time from the frantic pace.
While Alexander had teased he was going after Omega with intensity, but Fletcher was The Cleaner's strongest dance partner in this one.
This continued into the post-match as The Protostar was the strongest aggressor of anyone in The Family to hurt Hangman and Omega.
While Fletcher is the TNT champion, he was positioned here as the next man up for The Cowboy. Meanwhile, Omega has his next rival when he returns.
Result
Fletcher, Alexander, Matt and Nick def. Knight, Bailey, Omega and Page by pinfall.
Grade
A
Notable Moments and Observations
- The Young Bucks got a "These Guys Again?" title card before AEW showed highlights of their awkward meet-and-greet.
- Callis joined commentary but quickly dropped the headset and hid behind others when Omega arrived.
- Speedball went for the Ultimate Weapon on the apron, but Alexander ducked it. They fought to the barricade, and Bailey knocked The Walking Weapon into the crowd.
- Hangman, Omega and The Young Bucks met in the ring late, prompting a "The Elite" chant.
- Page ducked Nick, sending him into Matt with a Buckshot, followed by The Cowboy giving Nick a Buckshot.
- The show ended with officials helping Omega onto a stretcher after placing a neck brace.
Overall Show
7 of 7All killer, no filler. Dynamite was non-stop action, delivering multiple great TV matches while keeping the promos short and focused.
Everything had a purpose, either building toward Collision on Saturday or All Out at the end of the month.
In both cases, that build worked, selling why All Out may just be a can't-miss PPV, even while the world titles scenes are murky.
The TBS Championship match was especially excellent action and one of the best of Mercedes Moné's run.
The main event was great as well, though that was never in question given how much talent was in the ring.
The ending was especially effective, selling the direct threat The Don Callis Family posed to the entire AEW roster. Kyle Fletcher especially stood tall, possibly teasing him as "Hangman" Adam Page's next opponent.
While The Cowboy escaped The Death Riders, who have Darby Allin to contend with, AEW has established The Family as just as dangerous to the AEW world champion.
Whatever happens next, the stage has been set to sell many great matches to come and a roster that is delivering at the highest level week after week.
