Bryce Underwood Reportedly Named Michigan's QB1 Before Week 1 of 2025 CFB Season
With less than a week left before its 2025 season opener, Michigan reportedly finally made a decision on its starting quarterback.
According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, Wolverines freshman Bryce Underwood is set to be named the team's starting quarterback for their Aug. 30 season opener against New Mexico.
Underwood was competing with last year's leading passer Davis Warren and Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene for the starting job. David Cobb of CBS Sports noted that he's now the fourth true freshman in Michigan program history to start a season opener, joining Rick Leach (1975), Chad Henne (2003) and Tate Forcier (2009).
A 6'4", 228-pound signal-caller out of Belleville High School in Michigan, Underwood was the No. 1 quarterback and the No. 1 overall player in the class of 2024, per 247Sports' composite. He initially appeared to be on his way to LSU before flipping his commitment to the Wolverines.
247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins described Underwood as a "potential franchise signal caller with the ideal blend of size, arm talent and athleticism." He added that the youngster "projects as a multi-year impact player for a College Football Playoff contender that has a chance to eventually emerge as a first-round pick in the NFL Draft with his tools."
It could take Underwood some time before he finds his footing in his freshman year, but it's clear that he has an incredibly bright future at Michigan that will start with Saturday's season opener against New Mexico.
