Glory Johnson Pleads Not Guilty in Domestic Violence Case with Brittney Griner
WNBA star Glory Johnson has pleaded not guilty to domestic violence in the case involving her then-fiancee, Brittney Griner.
Cliff Brunt of the Associated Press reported the news Wednesday, with Johnson's attorney, Brian Russo, saying he wouldn't be concerned about going to trial.
“Based on the evidence that I’ve seen, I’d be happy to go to trial,” Russo said. “I’m even more confident in that decision because two previous attorneys who are prosecutors and have been prosecutors for a long time, also turned it down.”
In April, per AZ Central Sports, Johnson and Griner were arrested following an argument between the two that led to a physical altercation.
After the WNBA issued seven-game suspensions for both women, Johnson told Kathleen Hale of Sports Illustrated that she was the victim in the case.
"… So for the (WNBA) to release a statement saying that we were both guilty in the situation, it’s not right. It’s not correct … Brittney pled guilty … Brittney understands why I pled not guilty, and I understand why she pled guilty … she was even willing to speak to whoever she needed to, to get the point across.
"
Griner accepted a plea deal requiring her to complete 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling, at which point all of her charges will be dismissed.
Johnson and Griner married in May, but Griner filed for an annulment after 29 days of marriage. Johnson, who plays for the Tulsa Shock, is pregnant with her first child and will be unable to serve her suspension until returning to the WNBA in 2016.
