Championship Repeat Remains Possible
3 of 3The Winterville, North Carolina team continued its journey to a back-to-back championship in the Little League Softball World Series Thursday with a grueling battle against the Asia-Pacific squad out of Iwate, Japan.
Not dominating offensively as they did a year ago, the team ground out a 3-2 victory over the opposition. Japan scored both of their runs early on in the first inning off a fielding error by the Winterville shortstop.
The home state team answered, capitalizing on Japan walking the bases loaded by scoring one. They would tie things up one batter later. A hard-hit ball that bounced off the Iwate shortstop in the third inning allowed North Carolina to score the run that would make the difference in the game and propel them to the Orange Bracket finale.
The Pitt County team has not had the explosive offensive output that they did in last year's tournament but they have proven capable of coming from behind and putting themselves in a position to win.
A rematch with Iwate remains a possibility as the Japanese team competes again Friday for a chance to advance to the Orange Bracket title game. A showdown with the Central Region representative out of Indiana is also a possibility and would likely present another tough challenge to the favored home state squad.
Over in the Purple Bracket, the Johnstown, Pennsylvania team, competing in its first LLSWS, looks to be building momentum as the best team on that side of the tournament and, again, would provide a tough match-up for the defending champions, thanks to great pitching and a strong defense that has allowed just one run all tournament.
