Arch’s Graceful Ascent in CFB—and How the Mannings Are Mastering the Hype Game

Adam KramerAug 8, 2025

It could have been a circus. In fact, it should have been a circus.

Arch Manning’s arrival and existence in college football had the potential to spiral out of control before it ever began.

Given the football royalty he comes from, that last name we know so well, and the familiar facial characteristics that naturally remind so many of his uncles and grandfather that thrived at the collegiate and professional levels, the dots were easy to connect.

Instead, it’s been the exact opposite.

Sure, as he enters his third season at Texas—and his first season as the team’s starting QB—Arch is the biggest name in college football.

He’s the favorite to win the Heisman, which speaks to that last name, the program he plays for and the position he inhabits more than anything else.

Oh, and he's good. Or, at the very least, he has the arm, legs and pedigree to be good.

Don’t, however, mistake a lack of circus for a lack of interest. If he plays well, and he likely will, Arch’s stardom will reach a level rarely seen at the collegiate level.

But it will come, somehow, on reasonable terms. At a time when college football has lost all guardrails, Arch has stayed the course. In fact, he and his camp have done everything from the very start to play down his potential and eliminate hysteria before it can begin.

Most recently, the legendary Archie Manning, Arch’s grandfather, did his best to curtail buildup on a few fronts.

When asked about the possibility of his grandson leaving for the NFL next spring, Archie didn’t mince words in an interview with Texas Monthly.

“Arch isn’t going to do that,” he said. “He’ll be at Texas.”

For as few words as he used, the ramifications of such a statement are massive in nature.

Although the NFL Draft is out of sight, the buildup for football’s mega event started long ago. And although Arch has thrown less than 100 passes in his collegiate life, that hasn’t started slowing things much.

“People are saying he’s a Heisman candidate,” Archie added. “You’re not a Heisman Trophy candidate when you haven’t played but three games. It’s crazy.”

In a word, brilliant.

While it might seem like common practice to state the obvious, Archie managed to attach some much-needed reality to a situation that could still benefit from it. It’s this commonsense approach that has allowed Arch to operate in the way he has. It’s also not necessarily common practice in the year 2025.

This strategy is by no means new. In fact, from the moment Arch unceremoniously committed to Texas, it was put into motion.

No television appearance. No outdated hat selection. Just the news itself, which was served without warning.

From that moment, Arch and his team have done everything possible to avoid major headlines, all with an eye on long-term success.

While few 5-star QBs would wait two years to start, Arch did just that with former Texas QB Quinn Ewers on the roster. When Ewers decided to return for the 2024 season, the rumors surrounding a potential transfer for Arch began to circulate. Those were quickly subdued. As were the rumors of NIL payments and demands from the Manning family.

No transfer portal. No drawn out drama. In an age of change, Arch has been a constant for Texas. To say he's an outlier would be understatement.

Admittedly, Arch has advantages other recruits don’t. When your uncles are Peyton and Eli Manning, you have the luxury of curtailing interest rather than trying to manufacture it. The Manning family also doesn’t need NIL money; as such, they can be more careful and deliberate when it comes to the sport's many contentious matters.

This specific situation, unquestionably, has helped moderate the madness. But that’s not to say there aren’t pieces of a blueprint that other high-profile recruits and families can follow.

Noise and attention aren't everything. In some instances, these elements only amplify a situation that requires nothing else.

Ultimately, time will tell what happens next. If Arch plays well for a team with national championship aspirations, his stardom will soar. The hype will grow. His profile, which is already larger than life, will take on the next chapter.

With it, his draft stock will also take on new life. As much as Archie tries to help, it won't stop the conversation entirely.

If he doesn’t play well, the criticism will be robust. While being a Manning has clear, distinct advantages, it also comes with incredible weight. As quickly as hype builds, negativity can build even faster. That hype can be easily weaponized.

The pressure surrounding one of the most hyped college football players ever can work both ways. In the instance of Arch, who is essentially just getting started, he’s likely to experience a taste of all extremes.

For anyone, it’s a lot. Even him. Even this family, which has seen pretty much everything.

But given everything we’ve seen and heard—and perhaps more specifically all that has gone unsaid—there’s reason to believe that Arch and those helping him each step of the way are ready for all that’s poised to come next.
