The United States also held the previous world record, set at the 2024 Olympics with three of the four members of the current team. Douglass took the place of Lily King, who took part in her last professional event on Sunday, at the world championships.

Smith kicked off the medley for the U.S., finishing the backstroke in 57.57 seconds. Australia's Kaylee McKeown was a close second at 57.69 seconds.

Douglass provided some separation in the breaststroke. The New York native finished her 100 meters in 1:04.27, with no other country within three seconds of the Americans' combined time (2:01.84) heading into the third leg.

The butterfly saw Walsh exert her dominance over the field with a time of 54.98 seconds. Daria Klepikova of the Neutral Athletes B team was the only other competitor to finish in under 56 seconds (55.95).

Huske swam the freestyle for the final leg, clocking in at 52.52 seconds to give the U.S. a dominant and historic victory. Australia won silver with a combined time of 3:52.67 and China took home the bronze with a final time of 3:54.77.

Sunday marked the final day of competition at the 2025 world championships in Singapore. The United States led all countries with 29 total medals and nine golds, one more in the latter category than Australia.
