Katie Ledecky Wins 22nd Swimming World Championship Gold Medal with Dominant 1500M
Katie Ledecky returned to the top of the podium at the World Aquatics Championships after delivering a gold medal-winning performance in the 1,500-meter freestyle.
The American swimmer posted a time of 15:26.44, more than five seconds ahead of second-place finisher Simona Quadarella of Italy.
Ledecky now has 22 gold medals all time in the World Championships, and her 28 combined medals moved her ahead of Ryan Lochte for second behind Michael Phelps.
When it comes to the 1,500 meters, it's tough to envision anybody else ever matching her dominance. The Athletic's Zack Pierce noted she's a perfect 6-for-6 in the race at the World Championships when she competes, and she hasn't lost at that distance whatsoever since she was 13.
Ledecky may no longer swim at a world record pace with regularity like she once did, yet she remains head and shoulders above the competition.
Tuesday's result helps to set the stage for the most anticipated head-to-head battle of this year's festivities in Singapore.
Canada's Summer McIntosh paced the field in the 400-meter freestyle and won gold, with Ledecky settling for bronze. The outcome wasn't a shock given McIntosh's recent results along with the fact the 400 meters historically haven't been Ledecky's speciality.
The 800-meter freestyle, on the other hand, has been her domain. Should McIntosh get the better of her again in Saturday's final — assuming they both advance out of the heats — a changing of the guard is underway in women's swimming.
