Astros GM Calls Isaac Paredes Injury 'More Severe' Than Projected, Eyes Trade for Bat

Zach BacharJul 27, 2025

Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown revealed Sunday that third baseman Isaac Paredes' right hamstring strain is "a little bit more severe than we projected," according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic.

Paredes' injury is "accentuating" Houston's need for more offense on the trade market, per Rome.

The 26-year-old suffered the hamstring strain while running to first base during Houston's 7-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners on July 19.

The next day, Paredes was placed on the 10-day injured list.

Brown explained that his injury wasn't the sole reason for the Astros' interest in adding to their lineup, but they could look to specifically target an infielder.

“We’re still looking for a left-handed bat, so that didn’t change,” Brown said, via Rome. “If it’s an infielder, great. If it’s an outfielder, we’ll take that as well. It really didn’t change much, it’s just more of a preference to be an infielder now.”

Paredes put together a strong inaugural season in Houston prior to his hamstring issues, as he was named an All-Star for the second time in his career. He hit .259 with 19 home runs and 50 RBIs to go along with 49 walks, posting an OPS of .829.

His absence is a tough blow to an Astros squad looking to remain atop the American League West standings, currently holding a four-game lead for the No. 1 spot in the division with a 60-45 record.

Houston owns the second-best record among AL teams, but its 455 total runs scored are only the eighth-most in the league.

The Astros could target multiple players ahead of the deadline, as they've been linked to Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez and Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies.

The 2025 MLB trade deadline will be on Thursday at 6 p.m. ET.
