'Happy Gilmore 2' Celebrated by Fans as Adam Sandler's Movie Releases on Netflix
It's a day that has been nearly 30 years in the making.
Happy Gilmore 2 was released Friday on Netflix, providing a sequel to the classic golf film released in 1996. The film stars actor Adam Sandler as well as various returning actors from the original movie like Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald and Ben Stiller.
The plot of the movie sees Gilmore return to the sport 29 years after his first Tour Championship. He returns to help his daughter, Vienna, played by his real-life daughter Sunny, pay for ballet lessons.
The film also introduces Happy's three sons, Wayne, Bobby and Gordie, whose names reference hockey legends Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr and Gordie Howe. Sandler's character was famously an amateur hockey player in the original movie who converts his explosive slap shot to a blistering drive on the golf course.
In addition to the main cast, several notable figures had smaller roles in the film. The extensive list includes rapper Eminem, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, PGA Champions Tour golfer John Daly as well as active professional golfers Keegan Bradley, Nelly Korda, Tony Finau, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy and many others.
Following the release of the movie, fans took to social media to express excitement at the release and reminisce on the first film.
The movie did not have a theatrical release and is instead available on Netflix for subscribers. It has a 114-minute runtime and a PG-13 rating.
