Perry Jones to Celtics: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reaction

Adam WellsJul 14, 2015

Perry Jones is on the move, as the Boston Celtics announced on Tuesday that they acquired the 23-year-old forward from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald initially reported the deal on Tuesday morning.

The Thunder confirmed the trade on Tuesday afternoon, announcing that they received a trade exception and a protected 2018 second-round draft pick from the Celtics for Jones, a 2019 second-round pick and financial compensation.

Darnell Mayberry of the Oklahoman clarified that the Thunder will be sending the Detroit Pistons' 2019 second-round pick, which they acquired in the Reggie Jackson trade this past February, to Boston. Specifics about the protection on the second-round pick Boston is sending to Oklahoma City are not yet known.

Despite Jones' youth, the Thunder are likely looking to save money wherever possible after matching the four-year, $70 million offer sheet the Portland Trail Blazers gave to Enes Kanter.

According to Mayberry, the Thunder will accomplish two goals by trading Jones:

According to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, rival executives said the Thunder were shopping Jones for a first-round pick prior to the trade.

The Celtics have to be thrilled about getting the 6'11", 235-pound Jones in their rotation for nothing beyond a protected second-round pick. They needed to get bigger this summer, but they opted to go small in the first round of the draft by selecting Terry Rozier at No. 16 overall and R.J. Hunter at No. 28.

Jones doesn't exactly fill Boston's need for rim protection, but he is a long-limbed player who can help on the inside if Celtics head coach Brad Stevens needs him to.

The former first-round pick has a chance to salvage his career in Boston after never finding a steady role during his three years with the Thunder.
