'Elite' Giannis 'Truly is Becoming a Real Point Guard,' Says Bucks GM Jon Horst

Anyone who has looked at the Milwaukee Bucks' depth chart can see they have a void at point guard that could end up being filled primarily by their best player.

In an interview with The Athletic's Eric Nehm, Bucks general manager Jon Horst described why he thinks the "elite" Giannis Antetokounmpo "truly is becoming a real point guard" who can run the offense.

This is a sentiment that head coach Doc Rivers has also talked about a lot this offseason. He recently said on SiriusXM NBA Radio that Antetokounmpo bringing the ball up the floor when Damian Lillard was out due to a blood clot "changed" the offense and made them "more dynamic" because he's so difficult to guard.

Milwaukee's depth chart does suggest Antetokounmpo might be the best ball-handler on the roster. Kevin Porter Jr. is currently slotted in as the starting point guard.

The Bucks are expected to get reinforcements at the position with Cole Anthony reportedly set to sign with the club after agreeing to a buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Antetokounmpo does seem like he will at least start the 2025-26 season with the Bucks. There has been no indication he is going to pursue a trade right now. The two-time MVP said last week on a YouTube live stream with IShowSpeed he loves Milwaukee and will "probably" remain with the club.

If the Bucks are going to have Antetokounmpo, it makes sense for him to be the one running the offense. He has turned into a dynamic ball-handler over the course of his career, averaging 6.5 assists per game in each of the past two seasons.

Antetokounmpo did have the eighth-most turnovers per game in the NBA last season (3.1 per game), but his 11.2 turnover percentage was the lowest of his career. It was his first time under 12.0 percent since 2017-18.

Whatever the best version of the 2025-26 Bucks is going to be, it will likely require Antetokounmpo to be the one controlling the ball most of the time. He is more than capable of handling that role based on how he finished last season.
