Liverpool will retire the No. 20 jersey "across all levels" to honor the late Diogo Jota, the club announced Friday.

Liverpool chief executive of football Michael Edwards detailed the decision to retire his number.
“As a club, we were all acutely aware of the sentiment of our supporters—and we felt exactly the same way,” Edwards said, via James Carroll of the club's official website. “It was vitally important to us to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision and to ensure they were the first to know of our intention. I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club’s history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual. Therefore, we can say this is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person."
“Diogo joined us in 2020, he won us number 20, and he wore—with honour, distinction and affection—the number 20," he added. "As far as Liverpool Football Club is concerned, he will be forever our number 20.”
Jota was with Liverpool since 2020 after suiting up for Paços de Ferreira, Atlético Madrid, FC Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in his career.
He scored 65 goals for Liverpool across 182 appearances, helping the club clinch the 2024-25 English Premier League title. He also played a role on squads that won the FA Cup and EFL Cup in 2022.
Jota represented Portugal 49 times on the international stage as well, with him and his country securing a 2024-25 Nations League title in June.
Now, no other Liverpool player will wear No. 20 at any level.
