Mavs' Updated Roster, Salary Cap After NBA Draft, Reported D'Angelo Russell Contract

Zach BacharJun 30, 2025

The Dallas Mavericks were active on the first day of 2025 free agency.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Mavericks signed D'Angelo Russell to a two-year contract worth $13 million on Monday.

Dallas used the $5.685 tax mid-level exception to sign Russell and the team is now $1.6 million below the second apron, per ESPN's Bobby Marks.

Here's a look at the Mavericks' roster following the addition of the veteran point guard:

  • PG: Kyrie Irving, D'Angelo Russell, Brandon Williams
  • SG: Klay Thompson, Max Christie, Jaden Hardy, Josh Green
  • SF: Cooper Flagg, Caleb Martin, Naji Marshall
  • PF: PJ Washington, OIivier-Maxence Prosper
  • C: Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II

Russell opened the 2024-25 season as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, but was traded to the Brooklyn Nets for a package headlined by Dorian Finney-Smith in Dec. 2024.

He averaged 12.6 points, 5.1 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 39.0 percent from the field and 31.4 percent from three-point territory across 58 combined games with the Lakers and Nets.

The Mavericks will hope that a change of scenery can boost Russell's efficiency, as he owns 42.7/36.5/79.6 shooting splits for his career.

The 29-year-old will also have the opportunity to serve as a short-term starter for Dallas, with Kyrie Irving projected to miss the beginning of the 2025-26 season as he recovers from a torn ACL.

Russell will also join a familiar face on the Mavericks, as he was teammates with star power forward Anthony Davis on the Lakers from the 2022-23 season until he was dealt to Brooklyn.

He'll look to feed the ball to Cooper Flagg as well, with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft expected to immediately contribute as a rookie.

Adding Russell, who owns a career average of 6.9 assists per 36 minutes, should allow Flagg to find ways to score both on and off the ball.

As Dallas looks to return to the playoffs next season, the front office signed Russell to step into extended minutes at point guard.
