Jason Kidd Reportedly Hasn't Received Clarity on Future Despite Nico Harrison's Remark
The buzz linking Jason Kidd and the New York Knicks won't seem to go away, in part because the Dallas Mavericks still haven't signed their head coach to an extension.
According to Steve Popper of Newsday, "Kidd, according to a league source, has not gotten clarity from the Mavericks other than the public statements from [president of basketball operations and general manager Nico Harrison]. And the Knicks, as you might expect, aren't easing the Mavericks' minds by announcing they are willing to walk away from their pursuit."
Stefan Bondy of the New York Post offered more details on the potential timeline for a Kidd extension, however:
As Popper noted, the Knicks reached out to a number of head coaches currently under contract with other teams, including Kidd, Kidd, Minnesota's Chris Finch, Houston's Ime Udoka, Chicago's Billy Donovan and Atlanta's Quin Snyder. All of those overtures were denied by the respective organizations.
The Knicks have since interviewed Taylor Jenkins, Mike Brown and Micah Nori, with James Borrego also reportedly interviewing over the weekend. Because the Knicks continue to go without a head coach—and because Kidd remains without an extension—the situation continues to be an interesting subplot this offseason.
It's hard to imagine the Mavericks and Kidd won't eventually iron out a long-term extension, however. The 52-year-old is 179-49 in his four seasons leading Dallas, with a pair of trips to the Western Conference Finals during his tenure and an NBA Finals berth in the 2023-24 season.
The basketball gods saw fit to gift the Mavericks with the top overall pick and Cooper Flagg in this year's NBA draft, giving the team an intriguing core of Flagg, Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving. Keeping stability at head coach while that trio grows together makes sense.
New York's decision to start their head-coaching search with options who were spoken for, rather than bachelors, brought the Kidd situation into the headlines. More than likely, however, it ends as up being much adieu over nothing.
