LeBron James Rumors Has Fans Questioning Lakers Future, Pitching Trade Landing Spots
LeBron James is choosing to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers, but comments from Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul at least turned some heads on Sunday.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported James decided to exercise his $52.6 million player option for the upcoming campaign but noted Paul said the King is "closely monitoring the Lakers' moves and whether the team is positioning itself this offseason to field a title-contending roster" after losing in the first round last season.
"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul said. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.
"We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."
The comments had social media buzzing about the situation and even potential trades involving James that could send him back to the Cleveland Cavaliers or other teams:
It is notable that James opting into this deal gives the Lakers less financial flexibility to make other moves to bolster the roster, especially given Paul's comments.
And the NBA legend will also turn 41 years old next season and is anything but a long-term building block at this point of his career. While he remains among the best players in the league in an astounding display of durability and longevity, James won't be a member of the Lakers for the next decade.
Luka Dončić could be, which surely has some NBA fans speculating it might be better for the Purple and Gold to start building around the 26-year-old even if it meant moving James in a shocking trade.
For now, though, both stars are members of the Lakers and have their sights set on competing in a daunting Western Conference next season.
