Celtics Reportedly Expected to Stay 'Active' in Trades After Holiday, Porzingis Deals

The Boston Celtics are reportedly expected to continue their busy offseason.

According to Brian Robb of MassLive.com, the Celtics are planning to "remain active in the trade market while retooling their roster" after trading Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers and moving Kristaps Porziņģis to the Atlanta Hawks.

Boston is also expected to "explore" its "options" for Sam Hauser as well as recently acquired players such as Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang, per Robb.

The Celtics acquired Simons and two second-round draft picks from Portland in exchange for Holiday on Monday.

The next day, Boston sent Porziņģis to the Hawks in a three-team swap while coming away from the trade with Niang and another second-round selection.

Both Holiday and Porziņģis served as key starters on a Celtics squad that surpassed 60 wins in each of the past two seasons, winning a championship in 2024.

Boston moved back under the second apron after trading the two starters. The front office can now aggregate contracts in trades, trade first-round picks from seven years out, and use cash in trades.

Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens referenced the second apron penalties when speaking to reporters on Wednesday.

“I think the second apron basketball penalties are real, and I’m not sure I understood how real until they were staring me in the face in the last month,” Stevens said, per Jared Weiss of The Athletic. “So I do think that that can’t be overstated.”

While remaining in the second apron and staying a top championship contender was an option, Boston's 2026 title hopes took a hit when superstar Jayson Tatum suffered a torn Achilles in the second round of the playoffs against the New York Knicks.

The Celtics decided to make several major changes to their core instead, and more moves could be on the horizon.
