Scouting Report for Portland Trail Blazers Undrafted NBA Free Agent Caleb Love

B/R NBA StaffJun 26, 2025

The Portland Trail Blazers have signed Caleb Love to a two-way contract after he went undrafted in the 2025 NBA draft.

After spending three years at North Carolina, Love finished out his half-decade NCAA career with two seasons at Arizona, where he averaged 17.6 points, 3.4 assists and 2.6 threes per game while shooting 33.6 percent from deep.

All told, the 2020 McDonald's All-American made the All-Freshman Team in the ACC, received one first-team All-Big 12 selection, one first-team All-Pac-12 nod and a third-team All-American selection during his career. He also won the Pac-12 Player of the Year in 2024.

All of those accolades couldn't quite offset his age and lack of size, as Love found himself taken in the second round. Still, with the right development, he could prove to be a steal from that spot.

Essential Facts and Stats

College: Arizona | Position: PG/SG | Height: 6'2" | Weight: 202 | Age: 23 | Wingspan: 6’9" | PPG: 17.2 | RPG: 4.4 | APG: 3.4 | BPG: 0.3 | SPG: 1.2 | FG%: 39.8

Realistic Pro Comparison: Boogie Ellis

Love and Boogie Ellis both played lead guard in college, but shotmaking is their moneymaker.

While neither one is explosive around the basket, they can handle the ball, shoot off the dribble and space the floor as spot-up shooters.

Like Ellis, though, Love will have to refine all of the above to have staying power. His career college three-point percentage (32.6) shows he needs to work on his consistency.

Strengths

2 of 3
NCAA BASKETBALL: MAR 27 Div I Men's Championship - Sweet Sixteen - Duke vs Arizona

Frame: Though his height may make him a bit undersized, Love's 6'9" wingspan could be the key to him finding a role in the NBA.

Backcourt Versatility: Love didn't put up eye-popping assist numbers in college, but for a shoot-first guard, his career average of 3.4 dimes per game suggests he could eventually be more of a playmaker.

Shotmaking Firepower: Love's outside shot needs to be more consistent, but he can get hot and hit difficult shots in waves.

Weaknesses

3 of 3
NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament - Second Round - Seattle

Finishing: Love may be a bit overreliant on tough shots, perhaps in part because he's not confident in his ability to finish looks around the rim. Against NBA defenses, his lack of height and power could get him into some trouble inside.

Decision-Making: Again, the tough shotmaking is nice, but Love often fell a little too in love with that aspect of his game in college. Passing out of more of his isolations, rather than hoisting up contested jumpers, could serve him well at the next level.

Consistency: This is certainly tied into the knock above, but Love has to get more consistent as a shooter if he's going to survive in the NBA.
