2025 NBA Draft Scouting Report for Chicago Bulls No. 55 Pick Lachlan Olbrich

B/R NBA StaffJun 26, 2025

The Chicago Bulls have drafted Lachlan Olbrich with the No. 55 pick in the 2025 NBA draft.

Olbrich was named Big West Freshman of the Year in 2023, making him just the second player in UC Riverside history to earn the honor. He later piled up accolades overseas, winning MVP, Grand Final MVP and Most Outstanding Forward in New Zealand’s top league in 2024 and claiming a title in Australia’s NBL in 2025.

The Australian big man brings a polished low-post game and an advanced feel for the sport shaped by years of pro experience. He’s shown patience and footwork as a scorer. He also reads the floor well and makes smart plays within an offense, giving him a foundation that could translate as a role player.

The next step is proving he can keep up physically in an NBA setting. He’ll also need to develop more reliable shooting touch and show that he can hold his own defensively at the next level.

Olbrich has a strong foundation as a smart, tough interior scorer. If he can adjust to the speed and space of the league, there’s real potential for him to stick.

Olbrich is ranked No. 43 on B/R NBA Draft expert Jonathan Wasserman’s 2025 Prospect Big Board.

Realistic Pro Comparison: Domantas Sabonis

Los Angeles Lakers v Sacramento Kings

Projecting any incoming prospect as a Domantas Sabonis prototype feels risky and frankly unfair. After all, the Sacramento Kings big man just averaged 19.1 points and 13.9 rebounds per game (No. 1 in the NBA), and he's also a triple-double threat on any given night.

But to Olbrich's credit, he's flashed Sabonis-in-training potential with his polished footwork, elite hands and soft touch around the rim. He’s a crafty short-roll threat who makes smart reads, keeps the ball moving and can finish in tight spaces.

Whether it’s handoffs, kickouts or duck-ins, Olbrich plays with great feel and poise for his age. And he shares a nearly identical frame as the 2016 version of Sabonis coming out of college: He's the same height at 6'10" and just five pounds apart.

Strengths

Post Game: Olbrich is polished and coordinated, and he has strong footwork, balance and body control in the paint. He finishes through contact with pivots, clever footwork and physical-yet-crafty bumps. His elite hands also help him catch tough passes and quickly flow into short-roll moves or soft push shots.

Feel and IQ: A lot of what we just broke down above (and in the Sabonis comparison) comes down to this category. Olbrich plays with discipline and makes smart reads. He often delivers live-dribble kickouts and cross-court passes, and he's one of those players who always seems to be in the right spot.

Fastbreak Potential: Being a physical rebounder who tracks the ball well is one thing, but Olbrich has shown he's comfortable trying to get the offense going, and he's done it with some success. If he can prove he has the vision to hit ahead or connect early in the break, that will be a nice bonus at the NBA level.

Weaknesses

Shooting: When Olbrich plays with the ball in his hand, his game screams modern-day big. But he doesn't stretch the floor. He has shown zero range in his shot, and that held true during combine scrimmages against his fellow 2025 classmates.

Defense: On defense, Olbrich isn't nearly as imposing—or at least he doesn't show as much potential—as he does on the more glamorous end of the court.

Athleticism: Of course, his defensives deficiencies largely stem from a lack of athleticism, not for lack of trying. His effort is there, and the motor never seems to let up. But being undersized without much length means you might have to compensate with more speed or strength. Or, perhaps, just more offense.
