Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. Trades Reportedly Aren't Being Considered by Grizzlies
The Memphis Grizzlies reportedly aren't attempting to trade either Ja Morant or Jaren Jackson Jr. after trading Desmond Bane on Sunday.
ESPN's Tim Bontemps reported that the Grizzlies are "not looking" to deal either of their remaining two stars after clearing cap space to "complete a renegotiation and extension" with Jackson.
Per Bontemps, the "belief" is that an extension agreement with Jackson will be reached.
On Sunday, Memphis traded Bane to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four first-round picks and one first-round pick swap.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported Sunday that opposing teams will "investigate" Memphis' willingness to commit to both Morant and Jackson following the Bane deal.
The Grizzlies still view Morant as the "face" of their franchise despite Sunday's surprising trade, per ESPN's Tim MacMahon.
Morant, Jackson and Bane were part of a Memphis core that led the team to four playoff appearances over the past five seasons.
The Grizzlies failed to advance beyond the second round of the postseason in all four trips, though. This included a disappointing first-round sweep at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2025.
Head coach Taylor Jenkins was fired before the end of the 2024-25 regular season. Memphis owned a 44-29 record at the time he was let go.
On April 1, ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, Tim MacMahon and Michael C. Wright reported there was an internal perception that Morant was among the players that had "tuned out" Jenkins before the team chose to part ways with him.
The Grizzlies were also on the hunt for an assistant that could "forge a strong connection" with Morant prior to moving Bane, per NBA insider Marc Stein.
While Memphis traded a key contributor on Sunday, it still seems to be focused on building around Morant and Jackson moving forward.
