NBA Summer League 2015: Sunday Schedule, Latest Las Vegas Standings and Stats
Sure, the Las Vegas Summer League has a structured format and points system—a goal for these ragtag rosters to work toward—but that's almost beside the point.
The points are a simple carrot on a stick to provide a goal and endgame for glorified scrimmages between shadow versions of the majority of the NBA franchises.
The real focus is on individual performances, the last flickers of hope for eager-to-please veterans and the introduction of rookies both drafted and undrafted alike. Some of the teams' actual head coaches aren't even in charge for these games, instead giving way to help along the progress of others. Las Vegas builds on the foundation laid by summer-league play in Orlando and Utah.
It's a strange sort of dress rehearsal for, well, the preseason, really, but one that appears to be growing in popularity as it coasts on the leftover fumes of excitement generated by the NBA draft and early free-agency period. Some individual performances are certainly mirages, but it's fun to take in regardless.

Players to Watch on Sunday
Bruno Caboclo, Toronto Raptors

The 20th pick of the 2014 NBA draft—famously described by ESPN's Fran Fraschilla at the time as being "two years away from being two years away, and then we'll see," via Yahoo Sports' Eric Freeman—played in just eight games last season for the Toronto Raptors and is working hard on his game this summer to outpace Fraschilla's projection.
Caboclo put up 15 points, five boards and three steals in Toronto's 90-68 win over Sacramento on Friday. He's back in action against the Chicago Bulls on Sunday. The lanky small forward oozes athleticism, but his game needs refining. Of course, this doesn't stop fans from showering him with enthusiastic praise in glorified scrimmages, per ESPN Insider's Kevin Pelton:
Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri told SportsNet.ca's Michael Grange on Friday of the organization's growing excitement regarding Caboclo:
"We’re much more enthusiastic now than when we drafted him. When you see the kid begin to fill out and start to understand little things about the NBA, and it’s a kid you’re bringing in from a totally different culture, you get excited. He’s basically a baby and you’re bringing him in to the NBA life, which is tough.
"
Getting Caboclo as much game action as possible is key to his development; there are so many lessons to be learned. In an offseason in which the Raptors added the likes of DeMarre Carroll and Cory Joseph but lost Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams, a blossoming Caboclo would be a perfect way to alleviate future anxieties for the squad.
Jahlil Okafor, Philadelphia 76ers
With news that Joel Embiid is set to miss the entire 2015-16 season after needing a second surgery on his ailing right foot, via Yahoo Sports' Dan Devine, there's no escaping this reality now: Jahlil Okafor will figure into the Philadelphia 76ers' plans for the season in a big way.
It would have been tough to imagine Okafor, Nerlens Noel and Embiid sharing time or the floor if the latter was healthy, but a two-big-man tandem is plenty for the Sixers, who are the team that seems perpetually two years away from being two years away under general manager Sam Hinkie.
Okafor built upon a solid display in the Utah Summer League with a fine performance in the Sixers' 68-60 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday. Okafor finished with 19 points, 11 boards, three assists and two blocks, one of which was a sweet swat of the player drafted one spot ahead of him, via Bleacher Report:
Of course the Lakers' second pick of the 2015 NBA draft returned the favor, per Bleacher Report's Kevin Ding:
Okafor has displayed remarkably clever and polished footwork in the low post thus far, dazzling with his ability to create separation and get off clean shots. The blocked shots are mildly disconcerting, but he can develop better awareness with time. Improving his defensive positioning and showing greater burst will be two things to watch for when Philadelphia takes on Boston on Sunday.
The pressure will be on Okafor to deliver this upcoming season, as the team has little else to turn to in terms of a true offensive force at the 5 spot.
