Kevin Durant Reacts to Stephen A. Criticizing Giannis' Career amid NBA Trade Rumors
Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant doesn't like the impact "ring culture" has had on NBA discourse.
ESPN's Stephen A. Smith asserted Friday on First Take that Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo will be an "underachiever" if he retires with only one title:
Responding to a fan who shared the clip and asked for Durant's thoughts, KD succinctly said, "Game is ruined":
This is a point the 15-time All-Star has made before, and he's particularly well suited to weigh in on this conversation because championships and the journey to get them have influenced how a lot of fans view his legacy.
For the first nine years of his career, Durant was the best player in the NBA without a title. He made no secret of the fact that he was "tired of being second."
However, lifting two titles with the Golden State Warriors — twice winning Finals MVP in the process — didn't really change anything. The future Hall of Famer was judged to have taken the path of least resistance, so his championship rings didn't count the same.
Saying Antetokounmpo underachieved by winning just one title is simply laughable when you look at everything else he has done. He's a two-time MVP, the 2019-20 Defensive Player of the Year, a nine-time All-NBA honoree and a member of the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team.
The championship Giannis did earn with the Bucks was just the second in franchise history and their first in 50 years. He got his ring the right way by staying with the same team and overcoming past adversity.
For some, that still isn't enough.
There's plenty of room to debate where Antetokounmpo sits among his peers and past NBA legends, and championship success should be part of those discussions.
But titles or lack thereof shouldn't override so much else of what a player accomplished on the court.
