John Calipari Rejects Idea He'd Take Knicks HC Role Amid NBA Rumors, 'Hell of a Job'
While the New York Knicks poke around basically every employed NBA head coach in an effort to address their own vacancy, another college coach has taken his hat out of the potential mix.
No, Arkansas head coach John Calipari won't be heading to the Big Apple.
"I've been at Arkansas one year. People are totally committed and committed to me, personally," he said during an appearance on the Golic and Golic show Thursday (h/t Brad Crawford of CBS Sports) while discussing New York's vacancy. "I'm coaching at Arkansas, but [the Knicks] have a great organization, they got a terrific team. But it's not for everybody, now. You guys know, coaching the Knicks is like coaching—there's some college teams, I would say, not for everybody, and that one isn't for everybody. But you have everything you need to win, and you have New York City. So, someone's going to get a hell of a job."
Coach Cal isn't the first person from the college world to get ahead of any potential speculation about taking over for the Knicks. Rick Pitino previously took his name out of the running as well, while former Villanova head coach Jay Wright isn't interested either.
Granted, there are plenty of former championship-winning coaches currently without jobs, including Mike Malone, Mike Budenholzer and Frank Vogel, along with other potential options. The Knicks will have viable candidates to select from this summer. To this point, however, their coaching search has been defined by who isn't going to coach them next year, not by who might.
