Michael Jordan Rookie Card Has $2M Starting Bid at Pharrell Williams' Auction House
An extremely rare Michael Jordan basketball card is set to be available for auction later this month, and the starting price isn't cheap.
Per The Athletic's Larry Holder, Jordan's 1986-87 Fleer autographed rookie card will be available at an auction house founded by musician Pharrell Williams starting on June 17, with bidding ending on June 26. The card has a starting bid of $2 million.
The card will be auctioned off by Joopiter, an online auction house and marketplace founded by Williams. The auction of the Jordan card will be the first sports collectible sold at the auction house.
According to Holder, the card has a mint 9 card grade and a gem mint 10 autograph grade from Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA). It's the highest combined card and autograph grade ever for a Jordan Fleer rookie card. There are six autographed Jordan 1986 Fleer cards in PSA's database with a 10 card grade and just four with a nine card grade.
Jordan signed nine Fleer rookie cards with a blue Sharpie for a private collector last year, per Holder. It took almost five years to coordinate the signing, which was witnessed by a PSA representative, who then graded the cards.
Holder noted that the most expensive Jordan card sold was a one-of-one 2003-04 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection Ultimate Logos Signature game-used Logoman patch autograph card. That card sold for $2.928 million last summer.
