Warriors' Kuminga, Kerr Reportedly Don't Have 'Irreconcilable' Differences amid Rumors
The Golden State Warriors don't have "an irreconcilable player-and-coach or player-and-organization personality clash" with young forward Jonathan Kuminga, according to The Athletic's Anthony Slater.
Kuminga, for his part, "hasn’t slammed the door shut on a return," per Slater.
The 22-year-old is headed toward restricted free agency and is one of the bigger wild cards on the market, thanks to his age and unclear role on the Warriors moving forward.
Slater reported Kuminga "still has visions of becoming an All-Star" and "wants to be a featured player in an NBA offense." That's going to be tough on a roster that includes Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler.
Speaking to Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard, head coach Steve Kerr also laid out the dilemma of balancing Kuminga's development with Golden State's short-term aims.
"It's a tricky one because Jonathan obviously is gifted and wants to play a bigger role and wants to play more," he said. "And for me, I've been asked to win. And right now, he's not a guy who I can say I'm going to play 38 minutes with the roster that we have — Steph and Jimmy and Draymond — and put the puzzle together that way and expect to win."
ESPN's Kevin Pelton spoke to an NBA scout who suggested a sign-and-trade is the optimal outcome for Kuminga this summer. He'd get a fresh start on a new team, and the Warriors would receive something in return for his exit.
If Golden State re-signs the 2021 first-round pick, then it better have a clear plan for him in mind.
During the summer of 2022, the Phoenix Suns matched an offer sheet for Deandre Ayton after their relationship became a bit strained thanks to his impending free agency. Things didn't get any better from there and the 7-footer was eventually shipped out the following offseason.
Maybe Kuminga stays in the Bay Area and emerges as an invaluable piece of Kerr's starting rotation. Given his age, he still has a boatload of potential.
The worst-case scenario is an already tricky dynamic becomes even more fraught, as Ayton's tenure in Phoenix did, and hinders Golden State's quest for one more championship.
