Windhorst Says He's '98% Sure' Kevin Durant Will Be Traded by Suns amid NBA Rumors
ESPN insider Brian Windhorst reiterated his belief that the odds are very good the Phoenix Suns will trade Kevin Durant this summer.
Windhorst said on NBA Today he's "like 98 percent sure" Durant will be on a different team next season.
This echoes what Windhorst has said almost from the moment the trade deadline passed with KD staying in Phoenix. Appearing on the Feb. 26 edition of NBA Today, he suggested that "everybody's intentions are crystal clear" in terms of Durant giving everything he can to the Suns in the second half with an eye toward the exit door:
NBA insider Jake Fischer, however, reported on May 21 that Durant's return "has not been fully ruled out" just yet.
Especially when Phoenix explored the market for the 15-time All-Star ahead of the deadline, it's hard to see a future where he's with the team on opening night this fall.
As good as Durant remains, his presence no longer guarantees the Suns can even make the Play-In Tournament. They finished three games worse than the 10th-place Dallas Mavericks.
Newly promoted general manager Brian Gregory has his hands tied in terms of how he can strengthen the roster, too. Trading Durant or Devin Booker is the most straightforward way for Gregory to get some assets that either facilitate an organizational reset or help strengthen the supporting cast right now.
Booker probably has more value to an outside suitor, but an already downcast fanbase might tip over the edge if he's jettisoned.
Durant is only signed for one more season, and you'd assume he'd leave for greener pastures if he plays out the 2025-26 season in Phoenix. Dealing him now means at least salvaging something from his ill-fated move from the Brooklyn Nets.
