NBA Execs Reportedly Anticipate 1 of Most Active Offseasons Ever amid Trade Rumors

Adam WellsMay 27, 2025

Even with a light free-agent pool, NBA executives might still end up being busier than ever this summer given all of the trade speculation that's already happening.

Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, ESPN's Shams Charania said executives across the league are bracing for one of the most active offseasons ever.

Charania specifically cited the parity throughout the NBA being "so thin right now" as the main reason to think it could be busy.

If you look at some of the rumors that have already been floating around, it's not hard to envision this summer seeing a slew of activity involving marquee players and/or teams.

The biggest domino that needs to fall is Giannis Antetokounmpo deciding whether he wants to remain with the Milwaukee Bucks. All we know on that front right now is he's "open-minded" about exploring all of his options, per Charania.

Milwaukee is also reportedly hard at work on a plan it hopes will convince Antetokounmpo to stay.

Another key storyline revolves around the Boston Celtics' plan with a new ownership group in place to take over when the NBA approves the $6.1 billion sale and Jayson Tatum likely missing most, if not all, of the 2025-26 season after having surgery to repair the ruptured Achilles he suffered on May 12.

NBA insider Marc Stein has already reported that Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porziņģis are likely to be trade candidates.

Kevin Durant is also likely to be a trade target, given the Phoenix Suns' $366 million investment in their 2024-25 roster produced a 36-46 record with no playoff or play-in berth.

The Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves have already been cited as teams with potential interest in Durant.

San Antonio might be the most interesting team because it has arguably the most valuable asset in the NBA with Victor Wembanyama, assuming he has no setbacks in his recovery from a blood clot, and owns the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NBA draft.

While the Spurs could justify using that pick on a player like Dylan Harper to build a potential superstar duo with Wembanyama, ESPN's Jeremy Woo reported they will at least listen to offers for the selection.

Some other teams with promising young cores that are looking to take another step forward, like the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic, could attempt to make a big swing given how open things look in the East if the Celtics are going to retool.

There are also teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors, with aging icons already on their rosters, who are always brought up as looking to make aggressive moves as they try to maximize the remaining years of LeBron James and Stephen Curry, respectively.

The Lakers' situation is unique in that they just made the biggest possible move they could by acquiring Luka Dončić in February, so they need to reshape their roster around him since he will likely be the main driving force for the offense even with James still in the fold.

Those are just a handful of storylines to keep track of, not even accounting for any potential surprises that are almost certain to pop up because that's often how the NBA offseason works.
