SGA, Thunder Beat Wolves in Game 4 as NBA Fans Call Out Quiet Anthony Edwards, Randle
The Oklahoma City Thunder are one win away from the NBA Finals.
OKC defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 128-126 in Monday's Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals at Target Center and now leads the series 3-1. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way as he typically does, but it was a trio of Thunder playmakers who proved to be too much for the Timberwolves.
SGA just missed a triple-double with 40 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, while Jalen Williams (34 points and six three-pointers) and Chet Holmgren (21 points and seven rebounds) provided critical support.
They also significantly outplayed their Minnesota counterparts with Anthony Edwards attempting just two shots in the first half on the way to 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting with five turnovers. Julius Randle was worse with five points on 1-of-7 shooting with five turnovers as the home team wasted strong performances from Nickeil Alexander-Walker (23 points), Donte DiVincenzo (21 points) and Jaden McDaniels (22 points).
Social media called out the two Timberwolves stars:
The home team won each of the first three contests in this series in blowout fashion, and Minnesota was looking to keep the pattern alive following a stunning 42-point win in Game 3 after it looked outclassed in the first two.
But it was clear from the start the Thunder weren't going to lose by 42 again.
OKC jumped out to a 65-57 halftime lead as Gilgeous-Alexander put on a show with outside shooting, unstoppable drives, timely facilitating and even rebounding from the backcourt. Minnesota had no answer for the MVP, and the crowd grew increasingly frustrated every time he darted past another defender.
It was an even more notable start when juxtaposed against the other star, as Edwards was nowhere to be found in the first half. That Minnesota was still within striking distance at intermission was rather shocking, as Randle was also just 1-of-4 from the field.
McDaniels and Alexander-Walker did much of the scoring in the meantime for the home team, while Terrence Shannon Jr. and DiVincenzo provided a lift off the bench.
It was more of the same in the third quarter as the Timberwolves came charging back to tie it behind triples from Alexander-Walker and DiVincenzo. Rudy Gobert also added key points and offensive rebounding from the paint all while providing his typically strong interior defense.
Still, OKC had an answer for every Minnesota run in part because its own supporting cast was dialed in with Williams and Holmgren hitting shots when defenders collapsed on SGA's penetration.
Not even a three-point barrage from the Timberwolves down the stretch was enough to get over the hump, as the shot making from Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams proved to be the difference. Holmgren also mixed in some rim protection, and the MVP hit important free throws down the stretch.
Minnesota was unable to get a shot off in the final second thanks to a poor inbounds pass from Randle, and OKC now has the opportunity to close the series at home in Wednesday's Game 5.
