Giannis Says USA vs. World Format in NBA All-Star Game Would Be 'Must See Basketball'
Giannis Antetokounmpo has an idea for the NBA All-Star Game.
On Monday, the Milwaukee Bucks star responded to a social-media post asking who would win in a game between the top American-born players and the top international-born players and said, "This should be next year's All Star Game format!! Must see basketball."
It's hard to argue with Antetokounmpo's assertion.
After all, the NHL scrapped its normal All-Star format this season and instead hosted the 4 Nations Face-Off with players representing their countries. The four-team tournament featured the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden and was considered a massive success with intense games and raucous crowds.
Canada defeated the United States in overtime in the championship game in a matchup that clearly meant a lot to the players on the ice.
Perhaps something similar would unfold in the NBA if the league instituted an All-Star Game format with the Americans facing off against international competition.
The United States may also be in trouble in such a hypothetical, as James Harden was the last American-born player to win the MVP. That MVP award came back in 2017-18 with Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokić, Joel Embiid and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander combining for the last seven.
The specific hypothetical Antetokounmpo responded to Monday pit an international team of him, Jokić, Victor Wembanyama, Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Dončić against an American team of LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant and Jayson Tatum.
There are plenty of legends on that United States side, but many of the international players are in the peak of their careers and would be an imposing matchup at this stage.
Perhaps fans will get a chance to see who would win at next year's All-Star Game.
