Naomi Osaka Thinks Coach Will Question 'What the F--k This Is' After French Open Loss
Naomi Osaka was having a difficult time talking about her first-round loss to Paula Badosa in the 2025 French Open on Monday.
Speaking to reporters after the match (starts at 2:25 mark), Osaka was discussing how much she hates disappointing people when she mentioned thinking her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, will question "what the f--k this is" in reference to her performance.

Osaka then began to fight back tears before walking away from the podium as the moderator was attempting to solicit another question from the media. She did eventually return to field more questions.
The match started out strong for Osaka when she won a tiebreak in the first set. Her serve looked strong with four aces, but the tide turned on her after that opening.
Badosa won the second set in just seven games and closed it out in the third set for a 6-7 (1-7), 6-1, 6-4 win. Osaka committed 54 unforced errors in the match.
Osaka mentioned Mouratoglou as having coached "the greatest player ever" in reference to his work with Serena Williams. She hired him as her personal coach in September 2024 after parting ways with Wim Fissette.
Fissette had been Osaka's coach during the most successful period of her career from 2019 to '22, which included wins at the U.S. Open (2020) and Australian Open (2021).
Osaka sat out the 2023 season after announcing she was pregnant with her first child. She returned to the court in December 2023 and returned to the top 50 in the WTA rankings earlier this month after winning the L'Open 35 de Saint-Malo.
The 27-year-old has been open about her struggles with mental health and some of the difficulties that arise when speaking to the media during tournaments. She declined to do news conferences during the 2021 French Open, resulting in a situation where she withdrew from the tournament after organizers threatened to fine and expel her from the event if she refused to take part in media events.
Osaka has now competed at the French Open eight times in her career. This is the third time she has lost in the first round.
