Kelvin Sampson, Houston Agree to Contract Extension Through 2028-29 Season

The Houston Cougars agreed to a contract extension with men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson through the 2028-29 season.

CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein first reported the news, while noting Sampson will remain one of the highest-paid coaches in Division I.

With the 69-year-old on the sideline, Houston has returned to the heights it enjoyed during the Phi Slama Jama era. The Cougars are fresh off finishing runner-up in the NCAA tournament, the first time they reached the title game since 1984. They also advanced to the 2021 Final Four.

While Sampson's 299 wins are still well behind all-time leader Guy Lewis (592), his .781 winning percentage is the best ever for a Houston coach.

In tandem with their on-court success, the Cougars have reestablished an NBA pipeline. Damyean Dotson, Quentin Grimes, Marcus Sasser, Jarace Walker and Jamal Shead have all been selected in the draft since Sampson first arrived in 2014.

Especially on the heels of its performance this past season, a raise for the veteran coach was inevitable.

According to USA Today, Sampson's $4.6 million in total pay was 16th among the coaches with publicly available salary data. When he's making a little more than half what Bill Self ($8.8 million) and John Calipari ($8 million) earn, that qualifies as a bargain.

In April, Sampson told reporters he had what amounts to a "lifetime contract" with Houston. This will in all likelihood be the last stop in his coaching career.

Committing to the Cougars through 2029 will go a long way toward heading off any rumors about a possible retirement between now and then.
