Mavs Reportedly Wouldn't Trade No. 1 Draft Pick for Giannis amid Cooper Flagg Rumors
Any worry that the Dallas Mavericks would give up the opportunity to draft star prospect Cooper Flagg by trading the No. 1 pick to the Milwaukee Bucks for Giannis Antetokounmpo reportedly can be put to rest.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported that he inquired within the Mavs organization about the possibility of trading the top pick in next month's draft, and he was "emphatically told: 'No chance.'"
Another source told Stein, "No … not even for Giannis."
The Mavs only had a 1.8 percent chance to win the NBA draft lottery, but fortune was in their favor. This marks the first time in franchise history that Dallas earned the No. 1 pick, and Flagg is considered a can't-miss prospect.
Still, it's fair to wonder if the Mavs would make a drastic move, especially considering general manager Nico Harrison's track record.
Harrison is responsible for arguably the most shocking trade in recent memory when he sent star guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for a package that included star forward Anthony Davis. The deal didn't pay dividends like he hoped, and Dallas finished with a 39-43 record and lost to the Memphis Grizzlies in the play-in tournament.
Luckily for Mavs fans, it sounds like Harrison won't get the chance to give up another young star for an aging veteran. ESPN's Tim MacMahon reported on Tuesday that the Mavs "plan to select Duke forward Cooper Flagg and will not entertain the possibility of trading away the pick for a proven superstar." A source told MacMahon that team owner Patrick Dumont considers this opportunity to be a "gift."
All signs point to Flagg being the next big thing in Dallas, so Mavs fans can rest peacefully as the draft approaches on June 25.
