Mavs Reportedly Making PG 'Big Priority' in NBA Free Agency amid Kyrie Irving Injury

After securing the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA draft and the chance to select star forward Cooper Flagg, the Dallas Mavericks are reportedly eyeing other areas that they need to address this offseason.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported that the Mavs will be prioritizing the point guard position in their offseason pursuits as star point guard Kyrie Irving continues his recovery from a torn ACL.

"I'm told the Mavericks will be pursuing a point guard," Charania said. "Whether that's in the trade market, or in free agency. That's a big priority for them. Kyrie Irving is targeting potentially sometime in January to make his return. We'll see which point guard they can have as a plug-and-play for them."

Irving's torn ACL on March 3 left the Mavs without their primary ball-handler and derailed their chances of making a run to the playoffs. Dallas traded star guard Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers ahead of the February trade deadline in exchange for a package headlined by Anthony Davis, who couldn't carry the team out of the play-in tournament on his own without Irving.

The Mavs seemed to upset a higher power when they traded Dončić, as the move kicked off a series of unfortunate events. In addition to Irving going down, multiple players missed time with injuries, including Davis' six-week absence following an adductor strain suffered in his Mavericks debut.

Landing the No. 1 pick provides some much-needed optimism for Dallas, as Flagg has long been projected to be the best player in the 2025 draft class. He exceeded expectations during his freshman season at Duke on his way to earning National Player of the Year honors.

Still, the Mavs will need a reliable distributor to set things up for Flagg, Davis and company in Irving's absence. It's unlikely that Dallas would be willing to give up too much in a trade or spend big in free agency while waiting for Irving's return, but the team has enough movable pieces to put itself in a position to land a quality floor general who can stabilize things in the interim.
