T-Wolves' Mike Conley Says Anthony Edwards Could Be 'One of the Best' NBA Players Ever
Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley believes teammate Anthony Edwards can ascend to rarefied air when all is said and done.
"There's moments where I'll go home and I'll sit there and [think] I could be, right now in this moment, [in the midst of] being a teammate of one of the best players that ever played this game," Conley said to ESPN's Dave McMenamin.
Julius Randle played alongside Kobe Bryant on the Los Angeles Lakers and told McMenamin that Edwards is "Kobe-like."
"He's not scared of any moment and he wants those moments," Randle said. "His belief and confidence in who he is as a player is the highest I've ever seen or been around, for anybody."
The comparisons to Michael Jordan began in earnest last year, when Edwards averaged 27.6 points in the playoffs and helped get Minnesota to the Western Conference Finals. The Wolves are one win away from another conference finals berth, which is only helping to burnish the three-time All-Star's reputation.
Getting specifically dubbed a "young MJ" or the "next Jordan" can be a blessing and a curse because of the burden it thrusts on the player being discussed.
In the case of Edwards, it's difficult to watch his game and not sound like Conley or Randle. Still only 23, the guard is an electric scorer who relishes the big stage. He also has the self-assurance to believe he can beat anybody one-on-one, which is a hallmark of any legendary talent.
Eventually, Edwards will need to become an NBA champion and probably lift multiple titles if he's fulfill the kind of expectations some are laying out for him.
But those conversations don't need to happen for a few more years. For now, fans should just enjoy the ride.
