Mavs' Kyrie Irving Shares New Video Documenting Knee Injury Recovery
The suddenly-promising vibes for the Dallas Mavericks are only going to get better with Kyrie Irving progressing in his return from a torn ACL.
Irving posted a video on social media documenting his rehab and recovery from the injury that ended his 2024-25 season on March 3.
Irving's torn ACL capped off what had been arguably the most disastrous month-long stretch for any franchise in NBA history that didn't involve any off-the-court legal issues.
The fall started on Feb. 2 when Luka Dončić was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. Anthony Davis, who was the key player acquired by the Mavs, suffered an adductor strain in his first game with the club that kept him out for six weeks.
There were many other injuries that impacted the roster in mid-March that they were in very-real danger of not having the NBA-required minimum of eight players available, which would have resulted in a forfeit.
Even though the Mavs were able to avoid that catastrophe, the ongoing attempts by general manager Nico Harrison to publicly smooth things over with the fanbase after the Dončić trade failed spectacularly to the point he was asked during his end-of-season press conference why he shouldn't be fired.
The Mavs were given the ultimate life raft in the lottery when they jumped 10 spots to win the No. 1 overall pick, giving them the ability to draft Cooper Flagg as their next franchise player.
Irving's recovery is still a huge story for the Mavs because they don't currently have another high-level ball-handler on the roster. His future with the organization isn't necessarily guaranteed with a $43.96 million player option for next season, but there's an expectation the Mavs will extend him if he opts out.
Based on the timing of Irving's injury, he will miss the start of next season. The hope is he can return at some point in January.
Given that Irving doesn't seem to have had any setbacks in his recovery so far, it's encouraging to think the nine-time All-Star could stay on that timeline.
Irving averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game in 50 starts this season.
