Spurs Reportedly 'Open-Minded' to Trading No. 2 NBA Draft Pick amid Giannis Rumors
The San Antonio Spurs might be willing to shake up this year's NBA draft if it means adding some veteran star power over the summer.
ESPN's Marc J. Spears reported during Tuesday's NBA Today that the Spurs are "going to be open-minded" when it comes to potentially trading the No. 2 overall pick (4:30 mark).
Spears' comments came amidst a conversation about the Boston Celtics being expected to mix things up this offseason and break up their very talented, but very expensive, core group. He surmised that the Spurs might give Boston a call if that indeed happens.
Now, it's unlikely that Boston would part ways with Jayson Tatum (who may miss the entirety of the 2025-26 season with a torn Achilles anyway) or Jaylen Brown, while Derrick White has emerged as a fantastic option in the backcourt. That means that the two players most likely to be dangled this summer are Kristaps Porziņģis and Jrue Holiday.
Would the Spurs really entertain giving up the No. 2 overall pick for either of them, or even both?
Porziņģis is 29 and injury prone, while Holiday is 34—neither would exactly fit the timeline for younger players like Victor Wembanyama or Stephon Castle. Perhaps the Spurs would be more likely to part with a different asset—like the No. 12 overall selection they also own—instead.
And of course, if Giannis Antetokounmpo asks for a trade this summer and is willing to play for San Antonio, the Spurs would have to at least consider such a trade.
There are already questions about whether the Spurs would want to take Rutgers guard Dylan Harper at No. 2 with Castle and Fox already leading the backcourt. On the other hand, stockpiling young talent for Wemby to grow alongside of might be a better approach than pushing all of their chips to the center of the table immediately (that approach has notably worked well for the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets, for instance).
It's an interesting conundrum for the Spurs to consider (if Giannis indeed asks for a trade). Either way, it sounds as though they haven't made a definitive decision on how to proceed this summer just yet.
