Analyzing NBA Trade Rumors on Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant and More

Zach BuckleyMay 13, 2025

The NBA world is buzzing, and not only because of the nightly playoff action.

The draft lottery delivered a true stunner, with the Dallas Mavericks improbably cashing their 1.8 percent chance to land the No. 1 pick. Even before that improbable ping-pong ball bounce, the rumor mill was in a frenzy with trade talks surrounding a two-time MVP (who's very much still in his prime).

We're going head-first into the rumblings here and making sense of the latest trade talks around the Association.

Giannis Leaving Milwaukee?

Trade speculation around two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo is nothing new. What's different this time around, though, is this isn't the result of external dot-connecting or wishful thinking on behalf of rival executives. The superstar himself is reportedly weighing whether a trade away from the Milwaukee Bucks might be in his best interest.

"The two-time NBA MVP has not made any firm decisions on his Bucks future after the franchise's third consecutive postseason exit in the first round, but, for the first time in his career, Antetokounmpo is open-minded about exploring whether his best long-term fit is remaining in Milwaukee or playing elsewhere," ESPN's Shams Charania reported.

The Bucks, who have become worryingly old and expensive, have won just a single playoff series since their 2021 championship run and just suffered their third consecutive first-round exit. Their already gloomy future grew much more ominous, too, when Antetokounmpo's 34-year-old co-star Damian Lillard suffered a torn Achilles in late April.

This feels like the right time for Antetokounmpo to consider alternatives, especially when he can essentially handpick his landing spot. Want to team up with Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio, slot alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in Oklahoma City or help the Houston Rockets launch into full-fledged title contention? Those are just a few of the many possibilities Antetokounmpo could (and should) explore.

Rockets Uninterested in Durant and Booker?

The Rockets could be one move away from giving their offense the boost it needs to fully crack the ranks of heavyweight contenders. And they have a rich enough asset collection to pursue anyone they choose.

They'll apparently be awfully selective in that search. Oft-cited trade targets Kevin Durant and Devin Booker have seemingly fallen off the wish list.

Durant is reportedly "very interested in playing in Houston" but the Rockets have "significant reservations about that possible partnership" since the 36-year-old is such a poor timeline fit for their team, per The Athletic's Kelly Iko and Sam Amick. Houston also reportedly "no longer" holds "serious interest" in Booker, whose struggles this past season "shifted the thinking on this front."

So, who could Houston try to get? Well, Antetokounmpo is reportedly viewed as "the most intriguing within the organization." While he wouldn't help with their shooting shortage, he might still be the offensive fix this club needs. He has averaged better than 30 points in three consecutive seasons while shooting 58.9 percent from the field over this stretch.

Pelicans Keeping Zion?

2025 NBA Draft Lottery

Zion Williamson couldn't bring the New Orleans Pelicans any luck at the lottery. In fact, the Pels were among the bottom-feeders who backtracked, as they entered the night with the fourth-best odds and exited with the seventh pick.

Still, Williamson's presence perhaps brought New Orleans good news of a different variety. As NBA insider Marc Stein opined—and a source later concurred with—"That's not the sort of role you ask a star player to take on if you're looking to trade him."

It also feels like it'd be a strange move for Williamson to make if he was eyeing the exits. ESPN's Tim MacMahon has previously reported Williamson wouldn't object to a "change of scenery."

While this doesn't guarantee Williamson's future with the franchise, it does give the indication of perhaps starting fresh for the former No. 1 pick and the overhauled front office. Injuries have routinely upended this club, but if it could ever stay healthy, there's still lots to like about its talent base.
