Spurs Reportedly Looking at 'All Avenues' to Improve Roster, Get Wemby to NBA Playoffs
The San Antonio Spurs are looking to kickstart their rebuilding efforts around Victor Wembanyama for next season.
Per ESPN's Jeremy Woo, the Spurs are expected to look at "all avenues" to improve their roster this summer with the goal of making the playoffs in 2025-26.
This season was a step forward for the franchise, as the Spurs increased their win total from 22 in Wembanyama's rookie campaign to 34 in 2024-25. However, their attempts to make the playoffs were upended on Feb. 20 when Wembanyama was ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a blood clot in his right shoulder.
The Spurs were only 3.5 games behind the Sacramento Kings for the 10th and final play-in spot in the Western Conference when they shut Wembanyama down for the year. They went 11-19 in the final 29 games without their superstar.
While there haven't been any specific updates about Wembanyama's progress and recovery, the 21-year-old told reporters last month he has started light weightlifting and on-court work in a controlled setting.
"Everything we've said [about Wembanyama's recovery] has been consistent," Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson said at the time. "He'll be ready to go by camp next year. Things are going well. I know it's not hot news, but it's good news."
San Antonio already made one aggressive move by acquiring De'Aaron Fox in February. He only played five games with Wembanyama, averaging 21.6 points on 50.0 percent shooting and 7.8 assists in those starts.
Woo didn't specify any current players who might be on the Spurs' radar. They have been floated as a potential landing spot for Giannis Antetokounmpo if the two-time MVP decides he wants to leave the Milwaukee Bucks.
Even after the Fox trade, the Spurs do have several valuable draft assets to make a big move if one comes along that they like. They are owed unprotected first-round draft picks from the Atlanta Hawks in 2025 and 2027, plus a pick swap in 2026. They also received a 2031 first-round pick swap from the Sacramento Kings as part of the DeMar DeRozan sign-and-trade last summer.
