Lakers' JJ Redick Finishes 6th in NBA Coach of the Year Voting in 1st Season as HC
Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick received some consideration for the NBA Coach of the Year award.
The NBA released the final results in the voting for the award, which was won by Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson. Redick finished sixth in the voting, earning five third place votes.
Redick only received the votes for third place, earning one point per vote. Atkinson won the award over Detroit Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff, Houston Rockets coach Ime Udoka, Oklahoma City Thunder coach Mark Daigneault, Los Angeles Clippers coach Tyronn Lue and Redick.
This was Redick's first ever season as an NBA coach and he took over a team that had gone 47-35 and earned the seventh seed in the prior season. He led the Lakers to a three-win improvement and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, the season came to an end in the first round after the sixth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves eliminated the Lakers in five games. While it was a disappointing end, it was a solid season for the first-year coach and the acquisition of Luka Dončić during the season should extend the team's contention window for future seasons.
While Redick did not take home the award in his first season, he will hope the current core can help him capture it in the near future.
